Japan has all but clinched a spot in the quarterfinals by winning each of its first three games, but
Australia’s fate will be determined by Sunday’s results.

Japan have won the first three games in the group stage and have qualified for the next round.
Thatcomes as no surprise, as they were favorites to top the group. Australia have also won the two
games they've played so far in the tournament. They're well on course to qualify for the next round and
could top Pool B if they beat Japan in their next game.

While Team Japan have lived up to expectations and won the first three games of their WBC campaign,
Team Australia have matched them stride in stride so far. If Australia manage to upset Japan in their
game on Sunday (March 12), they could very well snatch top spot in Pool B.

The Japanese roster is filled with big MLB names Shohei Ohtani, Lars Nootbaar and Matasaka Yoshida.
Team Australia only boast of Aaron Whitefield as the only player with significant major league
experience. However, anything is possible in an international tournament like the WBC, so the matchup
between the two strongest teams in Pool B promises to be exciting.
The 20 teams have been placed in four pools of five teams for the first round of the 2023 World Baseball
Classic, with each team playing the others in its pool once each and the teams with the two best records
in each pool at the end of this round advancing to the knockout stage.

Japan defeated Australia, 4-1, in the opening round of the 2017 World Baseball Classic. More recently,
the teams played a pair of exhibition games in Japan on Nov. 9 and 10, with Japan winning by scores of
8-1 and 9-0.
