Adelaide 2040

Design Challenge 2: Rising Sea Levels

As a result of climate change, the sea levels have risen across Adelaide, making section 1 and 2 now under water. These people have now become displaced
and are going to be relocated in sections 3 to 8.
The current population density of Adelaide is 404 people per square kilometre.

Part 1:
How many people have been displaced in section 1 and 2 as a result of the rising sea levels?

Part 2
The people in sections 1 and 2 will need to be evenly distributed through sections 3 to 8. How
many extra people will each section need to accommodate?

Part 3
In addition to this, Adelaide has agreed to accommodate some climate refugees from around the
world. Each section will need to accommodate an extra 150 people. What is the total number of
extra people requiring accommodation in your section?
Part 4
Due to the increase in population and a decrease in liveable land area available, the population
density of Adelaide must increase. We must build up.
You will need to design a vertical housing to accommodate the extra people.

The land available for development is shown below. The footprint must not exceed the following
dimensions:

Use a ceiling height of 2.5m

Your total budget for the build must not exceed $50,000,000.
1 cubic metre (1 m3) will cost $400
Your buildings must house all of your extra people.
