Define DMAIC:

DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) is an approach to problem-solving defined by

Motorola as part of the Six Sigma management philosophy.

DMAIC is a data driven method used to systematically improve the proccess. The five phases are
followed structurally by working with problem-solving and process optimization.

Steps of DMAIC

There are five steps of DMAIC:

 Define
 Measure
 Analysis
 Improve
 Control

Step 1: Define the problem

First step define State the problem, specify the customer set, identify the goals, and outline the
target proces

Step 2: Measure the problem

Decide what parameters need to be quantified, work out the best way to measure them, collect the
necessary data, and carry out the measurements by experiment.

Step 3: Analysis the problem

Identify gaps between actual and goal performance, determine causes of those gaps, determine how
process inputs affect outputs, and rank improvement opportunities.

 Implementing process control

 Developing a plan for improvement

Step 4: Improve (solve problem)

identify solutions that are easiest to implement, test hypothetical solutions, and implement actual
improvements. The team will also collect data to measure their improvement against the data collected
during the ‘Measure’ phase.

Step 5:control
Generate a detailed solution monitoring plan, observe implemented improvements for success, update
plan records on a regular basis, and maintain a workable employee training routine.

Example of DMAIC

Cleaning Your Garage

Before you take on an organizational effort with a larger team and longer timeframe, you can try the
process at home. Imagine you want to clean up your garage so you can fit a new motorcycle inside. You
could use Lean methods to accomplish this goal.

Define:

Identify the scope of the cleaning project (cleaning the garage not whole house).

Measure:

Pace of the square footage of the overall garage and of the open floor space.Set a goal of required
amount of open floor space.(you may eyeball this, but it is a measurable area.)

Analysis:

Understand the types and amount of materials currently in place and the available storage locations.

Improve:

Use lean tools (eg. 5S, spaghitte diagrams) to execute cleaning and organizing, including removing
unessential materials.Install improved vertical storage facilities to minimize floor space used.

Control:

Label storage spots.Put "after" photos in place are ongoing targets.Conduct weakly audits to ensure "
Stuff" doesn't accumulate.
