STUDY OF NMS OPERATIONS- (PUNCOM-VMX-0100)

OBJECTIVE: After completion of this experiment, trainees are able to learn the NMS operations
likecreating a site, configuration of cards, cross-connect of channels in VMUX0100 through NMS.

INTRODUCTION:PunCom’s Network Management System (NMS) is a platform for control,

supervision and maintenance of remote network elements (NEs). It consists of hardware and
software distributed among the NMS master and the various NEs

T
NMS has the flexibility to support the different types of equipment and has an expandable
architecture so that the number of elements can be managed. Presently it can support VMUX0100.
This NMS also has the provision for being expanded to hierarchical set up in a master and sub
E
master structure to support larger networks, accommodating a large number of NEs and facilitating
configuration and supervision of the network when in the field.

Connectivity of NMS to VMX100

1. PARAMETERS PROGRAMMABLE IN VMX-0100

The following major parameters are programmable in VMX-0100 and may be modified from
NMS.
(i) Parameters related to PCM Trunks
 Framing format CRC 4/Standard
 Enable / Disable trunk
 Time slot cross connection
 75 / 120 Ohm Line Impedance
(ii) Parameters related to VF

 VF Port type :E&M 4W / E&M 2W /Loop IC /Loop OG/FXS / FXO / Hotline

 Trans gain
 Receive gain
 Time slot mapping
(iii) Parameters related to Data

(I) When data card is G703

 Time slot mapping

(iv) Miscellaneous parameters

 Defining all alarms in Mux as Major/Minor/None

 Setting up omnibus Conferencing channels
 Defining conditions for activating Mux bypass
2. REMOTE PROGRAMMING OF VMX-0100
NMS can be used to implement the remote programming of other VMX-0100 in a network from a
single Mux.For remote monitoring and configuration of VMX equipment, NMS interface type has
been incorporated. Under this method, an operator is provided with Network Management
System software application compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP. The NMS
data issent over 2MB stream i.e. 2 bits of NMS data are transferred in every PCM30 frame. An
Ethernet port is provided on TME card for this purpose.
2.1. Web Server
This interface type is additional feature provided for operators who demand remote operation of
VMX using WWW (World Wide Web). The operator accesses the various menus by entering IP
of VMX equipment in Internet Explorer of Microsoft Windows Operatingsystem. The Ethernet
port provided on TME card is used for this interface type. HTTP 1.0 version is supported by
VMX equipment. Various menus accessible from NMT except Diagnosis are also accessible
using this method. However
However,, the operator must check web browser version before using this
method. system. The Ethernet port provided on TME card is used ffor or this interface type. HTTP
1.0 version is supported by VMX equipment.

i) Login Screen
IR

To use NMS, one has to login in the NMS.

The login is protected by a user id and a
Password as shown below. A maximum
of 3 triescan be made. Default user name
and password is as given

User Name: web

ii) Main NMS screen

This is the main screen, which is displayed
when NMS starts. The NMS screen can show
status of 240 stations. NMS polls all the stations
and gets the response from polled station.
If station has some alarm then it updates the
Alarm log and changes color of that particular
station icon. If station doesn’t respond after a
particular number of retries then the station is
declared as mute.

Through right click of mouse button on a station user can view the status of any equipment. The
various screens are explained in the following pages

iii)Dialog box for configuration of Site Information

Through this screen User can Add New Site and user
have to specify the Type of Site whether it is a Primary
Site, Secondaryor None type. Site Status can be Active
or Non Active.

iv)Configuration

This command helps the user to enter Device

Information i.e.Device Types, Device Model,
Device address and Devicestatus (which can
be active or Non-active).

On selecting Transaction command we can
Configuredevice or check the status of any device.
Also there aretwo modes, which are incorporated
in this menu. The oneis Edit Mode. In this case
polling is stopped, user can add different element
in the network and can change the position
of NEs in NMS main screen. Other is Normal Mode
in whichpolling starts and normal functioning of the
NMS is maintained.Screen 4
There are one or many different Buttons on the corresponding forms of Transaction forms.
They are as follows:
Configure: - Users can use this Button to set the configured VMUX0100 parameters.
GetSetting: - This Button is used to get the status of particular parameter.
Clear: - This one clears all the boxes of the selected form.
Close: - This Button is used to close the form selected.

vii)Activate Routing Table

Each VMUX0100 maintains four sets of routing tables
for different routing options. This command can be used
for selecting any of the four sets of routing tables.
This option should be executed with care as existing
connections may break down.

viii)Add Conferences
This command helps to set up conference by
specifying Routing table no., Port no., and
Time slot for PCM1 & PCM2 along with Conference
number and type. VMUX0100 can support up to 18,
three parties or 8 four parties conferencing channel.

This command helps the user to enable/disable trunk
for PCM1 or PCM2. PCM port impedance can be set
to 75ohm or 120ohm. Cyclic redundancy check (CRC)
can also be made enabled

xi)Configure VF
This command is used to configure VF by specifying
the channel number, signal type, and Tx/Rx gain.
Different interfaces that can be set are EM2W, EM4W,
FXO, FXS, LPIG and LPOG.

This command is used to modify any existing
connection. Source/Destination stream and time
slot has to be specified for a particular routing
tableno.Source/Destination stream can be PCM1,
PCM2 or a PORT
