AHA MOMENT

I've learned that in Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, children acquire their cultural values,
beliefs, and problem-solving techniques through cooperative interactions with more experienced
members of society. The Zone of Proximal Development, private speech, and culture-specific tools are
only a few of the ideas found in Vygotsky's theory. As he firmly believed that community plays a
major role in the process of "creating meaning," Vygotsky's ideas place an emphasis on the basic
function of social interaction in the formation of cognition (Vygotsky, 1978). Contrary to Piaget's
theory, which held that children's learning must must come before their development, Vygotsky
claimed that "learning is a necessary and universal aspect of the process of developing culturally
organized, specifically human psychological function" (1978, p. 90). In other words, social learning
tends to precede (i.e., come before) development.

The ecological systems theory developed by Bronfenbrenner is one of the most widely
recognized theories explaining how social settings affect human development. According to
Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, a child's development is viewed as a complex system of
relationships that are influenced by a range of environmental factors, from the child's immediate
home and school environments to more general cultural values, laws, and practices. According to
Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory, your upbringing has an impact on every aspect of your
life. The thoughts you have, the feelings you experience, and the preferences you have are all
influenced by social variables.
