”Love Story”
Taylor Swift

We were both young when I first saw you I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
I close my eyes and the flashback starts You'll be the prince, and I'll be the princess
I'm standing there It's a love story, baby, just say yes"
On a balcony in summer air
Romeo, save me, they're trying to tell me
See the lights, see the party, the ball gowns how to feel
See you make your way through the crowd This love is difficult, but it's real
And say "Hello" Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this
Little did I know mess
It's a love story, baby, just say yes
That you were Romeo, you were throwing
Oh, oh-oh
pebbles
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet" I got tired of waiting
And I was crying on the staircase Wondering if you were ever coming around
Begging you, "Please don't go" My faith in you was fading
And I said When I met you on the outskirts of town
And I said
"Romeo take me somewhere we can be
alone "Romeo, save me, I've been feeling so alone
I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run I keep waiting for you, but you never come
You'll be the prince, and I'll be the princess Is this in my head? I don't know what to
It's a love story, baby, just say yes" think"
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring
So I sneak out to the garden to see you
And said
We keep quiet 'cause we're dead if they
knew "Marry me, Juliet, you'll never have to be
So close your eyes alone
Escape this town for a little while, oh, oh I love you, and that's all I really know
I talked to your dad, go pick out a white
'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet
dress
letter
It's a love story, baby, just say yes"
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet"
But you were everything to me Oh, oh-oh
I was begging you, "Please don't go" Oh, oh-oh, oh
And I said 'Cause we were both young when I first saw
you
"Romeo, take me somewhere we can be
alone
A Critique of Taylor Swift’s Song “Love Story”

Taylor Swift is a young country pop singer, so she is likely to make intersexual references,
such as in her song "Love Story," which is an homage form of intersexuality in which she refers
to Romeo and Juliet within the song to convey their love story of not being allowed to be
together due to their parent’s disapproval. The intertextual connection to Romeo and Juliet is
visible within the mise-en-scene, as Taylor Swift, who plays Juliet, waits on her balcony in her
gown for Romeo to come to get her, implying that she is the damsel in distress waiting for her
hero to take her away from her family so they can be together.

As we can see in the music video of Taylor Swift, I noticed that they're wearing gowns
from the 14th-15th century to enhance their portrayal of the story as she sings about the love
story. The period setting is also portrayed in the traditional dancing within the ballroom when
Romeo first meets Juliet (Taylor) as they dance with one another. Taylor Swift chose these links
because she is singing about love, Romeo and Juliet is the most famous tragic love story of all
time which the audience would be able to recognize straight right away, even in the lyrics where
she refers to him as "Romeo" and "my daddy said stay away from Juliet," indicating that Taylor
gives her audience a brief understanding of what she is attempting to express in her song. It is
not a normal love story, but she is able to diverge from the original by concluding the song with
a happy conclusion.
