85 percent of Grade 9-Helium and Grade 9-Sodium must
have:
1. determined the different characteristics of
stars;
2. described the relationship between the color
of a star and its brightness; and
3. differentiated apparent magnitude and absolute
magnitude.
3. Science Concepts
Stars
Huge, massive spheres of glowing light
Sparkling like diamonds in the sky
Diameter is about millions of kilometers
Emits large amounts of radiant energy from
nuclear reactions (between hydrogen and
helium) in its interior
SUN, the closest star on Earth.
Characteristics of Stars
Color indicates the surface temperature
of a star.
Size- stars although they appear
similarly in the sky their sizes still
varies.
Magnitude or Brightness
Apparent magnitude and Absolute
magnitude

Example: In
terms of
apparent
brightness,
Sirius appears
brighter than
Rigel since it
is closer to
the Earth.
But compared
to the sun,
the Rigel is
thousands

Sirius is only
27 times

terms of
absolute
magnitude,
Rigel is
brighter than
the Sirius.
