MEASUREMENT

• Measurements - the determine of the size of magnitude of something

Types of Measurement

• Qualitative -
• Quantitative - number and unit

Systems of Measurement

• English or British system

- inches
- feet
- pounds
- ounces
- gallons
- miles

• Metric system

- centimeters
- meters
- kilograms
- grams
- liters
- kilometers

• Unit Prefixes - it is a specifier mnemonic that is perpended to units of measurement to

indicate multiples or fractions of the unit.

• Dimensional Analysis - to convert a physical quantity from one system units to another

• Unit Equality - it is an equation that shows how different units are related
• Scientific Notation - it is a ways of expressing numbers that are too large or too small to he
conveniently written in decimal form

UNCERTAINLY MEASUREMENT

• Certain (exact) Digits - are the ones that the measuring instrument can give

• Least Count - the smallest value up to which an instrument can measure

• Uncertain Digits - are the ones that you estimate

PRECISION & ACCURACY

• Precision - is the closeness of the measurements to each other

• Accuracy - is the closeness of the measurements to a specific value

SCALARS AND VECTOR

Physical quantities can be classified as scalars or vectors

• Scalar - these are quantities that are expressed only in magnitude, number and unit
Examples: distance, mass, density, length, speed, energy, power.

• Distance
- it is a scalar quantity
- it refers on how far an object has travelled

Formula: dt = d1+d2+d3...

• Vector - are quantities that are expressed in magnitude number, unit and measure of
direction.
• Displacement
- it is a vector quantity
- it refers on change of position of an object

Formula: ∆x = Xf - Xi

• Parallel - vectors in the same direction

• Anti parallel - vectors in opposite direction

KINEMATICS (HORIZONTAL MOTION)

• Kinematics is a branch of mechanics

• Mechanics
- Kinematics and Dynamic- study of motion
• Kinematics - describe motion
• Dynamics - causes of motion
