Other Lamps

Objectives

At the end of this module the learner is expected identify the parts and discuss the

functions of other lamps.

Learning Competency
Identify the parts and discuss the functions of other lamps.

Let’s Recall
Label the parts of a basic LED lamp.

Let’s Understand

Other Lamps
Mercury Lamp
A mercury-vapor lamp is a gas discharge lamp that uses an electric arc through

vaporized mercury to produce light. The arc discharge is

generally confined to a small fused quartz arc tube mounted

within a larger borosilicate glass bulb. The outer bulb may be

clear or coated with a phosphor; in either case, the outer bulb provides thermal insulation,

protection from the ultraviolet radiation the light produces, and a convenient mounting for the

fused quartz arc tube.

Mercury vapor lamps are more energy efficient than incandescent and most fluorescent lights, with

luminous efficacies of 35 to 65 lumens/watt. Their other advantages are a long bulb lifetime in the range

of 24,000 hours and a high intensity, clear white light output. For these reasons, they are used for large

area overhead lighting, such as in factories, warehouses, and sports arenas as well as for streetlights.

Advantages

1. It produces a bright white light, with relatively long life.

2. It is more energy efficient than incandescent and most fluorescent lights, especially for

outdoor applications, with luminous efficacies of 35 to 65 lumens/watt.

3. It is ideal for outdoor use such as landscaping and street lighting applications spanning many

decades.

4. In landscaping applications, they make plants and trees look extremely rich and vibrant, as

they bring out the green color of foliage beautifully.

2
Disadvantages

1. It does not flatter the human skin color thereby making them not an ideal technology for

indoor applications.

2. Except for incandescent, they are the most inefficient source of light, with an efficacy in

the 25 to 55 lumens per watt range.

3. Mercury lamps may be greatly affected by lamp lumen depreciation and should be replaced

after 24,000 hours.

4. Poor lumen maintenance compared to other HID sources.

5. Require a maximum warm-up period of five to seven minutes before giving full light output,

depending on lamp type, ballast and ambient temperature. They can be used only where this

delay is acceptable.

6. Four to five minutes cooling and restart time.

7. New outdoor installations are illegal under some state laws.

8. Lamps are quite voltage sensitive. Unless special ballasts are used, care must be taken to

keep the supply voltage within plus or minus 5% of the rated voltage.

9. Mercury lamp ballasts are noisy. When this presents a problem, remote mounted ballasts

may be an alternative.

10. A special dimming ballast is required to dim mercury lamps.

Sodium-Vapor Lamp

A sodium-vapor lamp is a gas-discharge lamp that uses sodium in an excited state

to produce light at a characteristic wavelength

near 589 nm. Two varieties of

such lamps exist: low pressure and high pressure. ... Low-pressure sodium lamps only

give monochromatic yellow light and so inhibit color vision at night.

Advantages:

1.Most energy efficient among all artificial light sources.

2.Very long life span up to 50000 hours.

3.Color temperature is always warm

4.They are ideal for using at airports, seaports, streets, railway marshalling yard and crossings etc.

4
Disadvantages:

1.Only monochromatic color.

2.Bad color rendering index

3.Unusable for color recognition places.

4.Sodium is hazardous and can catch fire in contact of air

Halogen Lamp

A halogen lamp, also known as a tungsten halogen, quartz-halogen or quartz

iodine lamp, is an incandescent lamp consisting of a tungsten filament

sealed into a compact transparent envelope that is filled with a mixture

of an inert gas and a small amount of a halogen such as iodine or

bromine.

5
Advantages:

1. small volume

2. luminous efficiency

3. stable color temperature

4. almost no light decay, and long

life. Disadvantages:

1. High operating temperature

2. More costly than incandescent - halogen bulbs are a little more expensive than

incandescent and sometimes require a low voltage transformer. Today they are considered

inexpensive compared to CFLs and LEDs.

3. Heat - Halogen bulbs emit a lot of heat. It can be very uncomfortable to sit under halogen

bulbs in a kitchen, work space or elevator. They can be dangerous to touch when turned on.

4. High Pressure Gas – May require shield - halogen bulbs require some shielding in most

applications in case they shatter.

5. Cannot be touched with hands - halogen bulbs should not be touched with bare hands

even when cool. The oil from your fingers will heat shortening the life of the bulb.

6. Short Life Span - possibly the biggest drawback of halogen bulbs is their short life span

which averages only about 2000 hours. When lit 24/7 this translates into about a 6-month life

span. Changing bulbs every 6 months is costly and time consuming.
