GUIDELINES IN USING SCIENCE LABORATORY APPARATUS


JUNE 18, 2019
9: 00-10:00 A.M

Rowela B. Estrael, the science teacher and laboratory attendant called to order an orientation to guide
the Junior High School students of the Sacred Heart Seminary for the guidelines in using laboratory
apparatus at 9:00 a.m. on June 18, 2019 I n the gymnasium.
Instruction:
 The students will bring notebook and ball pen to take down notes the important details
in the orientation.
 They are reminded to be attentive and behave all the time

The sequences of the orientation are as follows:


1. Laboratory Safety Plan
• No eating, drinking, applying cosmetics or adjusting eye contacts
• No running, jumping, or horseplay
• All spills will be cleaned up immediately
• Know where the necessary spill kits are located
• Always wash your hands before leaving the laboratory
• Leave the laboratory clean and organized
• No sandals or open‐toed shoes
• Appropriate lab attire should be worn to protect against spills
• Lab coats are NOT to be worn outside of the laboratory areas
• Prevent chemical inhalation exposure (a mode of entry) − No “sniff‐testing”
• Prevent chemical ingestion exposure (another mode of entry)
− Never pipette by mouth
− Always use a bulb to pipette
2. Emergency Action Plan
• Know your evacuation routes
• Know fire extinguisher, AED, drenching hose, and first aid kit locations
• Know what to do in case of a:
− Fire emergency
− Laboratory injury/accident emergency
− Fire emergency
− Laboratory injury/accident emergency
-Other natural disaster emergencies/preparedness
3. Chemical Hygiene Plan
• Always use personal protective equipment (PPE)
− Gloves
− Safety glasses
− Lab coat
• Utilize chemical hoods to limit exposure
• Use and dispose of all chemicals properly
• Store chemicals appropriately
• Contact your teacher if assistance is needed
5. Use of Basic Equipment
• Students will be shown how to use all necessary laboratory equipment
− Pipettes
− Centrifuges
− microscope
- Bunsen burner

The teacher will open for questions and clarifications.
