There is an interesting connection between the Hunters, Sneddons and Hares in and
around Newbattle. John Hunter (1844), the son of James Hunter and Janet Sneddon is
related to John Hare through his sister Marion Hunter Sneddon and his own wife Helen
Hare. Marion Hunter (Sneddon) McNeill's daughter Susan married John Hare. John Hare is
the is the son of Thomas Hare and Euphemia Haswell. Thomas is the son of William Hare
and Esther Renwick. Their other son John Hare married Janet Pryde and they had a
daughter Helen who married John Hunter (1844), so the families all come together via a
number of marriages over three generations.

I was not able to find Jeanie or any of his 4 children after the 1911 Census in Dalkeith, either
marriage, immigration or death. Then by chance I received information about Jeanie and the
family from a distant relative: Some time around late 1912 David and Jeanie separated.
Jeanie took the 4 children to Australia in January 1913 on the Waimana where they settled
around the Newcastle area. Stewartina changed her name to Christina (who could blame
her!) and married Charles Normanton Ashton who had immigrated from Yorkshire. The
eldest boys remained single. David married Lona Stewart in 1935 but was killed by a train in
1945. Jeannie died in Kurri Kurri in 1964.

Born two years before his parents George and Mary marry.
My Grandfather, John Stein Dryden, lived in hard times. He was born on New Year’s Eve
1873 and grew up in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle at 542 Castle Hill, less than a 100
metres from the Castle entrance. In 1882 when he was 9 his mother and half sister Harriet
died, leaving him with his father George Stein Dryden, two younger brothers and a sister. He
also had a half brother James who had died earlier in 1878. His father was unable to cope
bringing up a young family on his own and so the two youngest, his sister Mary and brother
William, were taken in by Emma Stirling’s charitable organisation and shipped off to Canada
in 1887. At about the age of 16 John and his brother George had become coal miners at
Clayhouses near Gorebridge, south of Dalkeith

Thank you Alex for your kind words and putting me in the picture. I am very
sensitive about it and really don't talk about it unless I have to. Here goes...
When my Gran Annie Sneddon died she was living with my Mum and Dad in
Worcestershire. The day before her funeral, my 2 aunts and cousin Scott
came down from Scotland to stay with my parents along with myself and
husband. That night there was a fire in my parents home and everyone died
except myself, my husband, my brother and my mum. My Gran and My Dad
ended up having their funeral together. It also meant that my cousin Ian
Sneddon was without a Mum, Dad and brother. It really was a tragic and
devastating time for our family
