This European Standard has been prepared by Page
Technical Committee ECISS/TC 28, Steel forgings, the
Secretariat of which is held by BSI. Foreword 2
This European Standard replaces EN 10228-1:1999. 1 Scope 3
The titles of the other parts of this European Standard 2 Normative references 3
are: 3 Items for agreement 3
Ð Part 2: Penetrant testing; 4 Written procedure 3
Ð Part 3: Ultrasonic testing of ferritic or 5 Personnel qualification 3
martensitic steel forgings;
6 Testing system 3
Ð Part 4: Ultrasonic testing of austenitic and
austenitic-ferritic stainless steel forgings. 7 Stage of manufacture 4
This European Standard shall be given the status of a 8 Surface condition 4
national standard, either by publication of an identical 9 Coverage 4
text or by endorsement, at the latest by
September 1999, and conflicting national standards 10 Magnetization 4
shall be withdrawn at the latest by September 1999. 11 Application of detection media 5
This European Standard has been prepared under a 12 Viewing conditions 5
mandate given to CEN by the European Commission 13 Classification of indications 5
and the European Free Trade Association. This
European Standard is considered to be a supporting 14 Recording and acceptance criteria 5
standard to those application and product standards 15 Removal of defects 7
which in themselves support an essential safety 16 Demagnetization 7
requirement of a New Approach Directive and which
make reference to this European Standard. 17 Reporting 7
According to the CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations, Annex A (normative) Magnetization using
the national standards organizations of the following prods or electromagnetic yoke 8
countries are bound to implement this European
Standard: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark,
Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland,
Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,
Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Explanations
a) Reference surface = 148 mm 3 105 mm (i.e. A6 format).
b) dl < 5L1; d2 < 5L3; d3 > 5L3.
c) L1, L2 and L3 = individual lengths of interacting indications.
d) Total interacting length Lg = (L1 + d1) + (L2 + d2) + L3.
e) L4, L5 and L6 = lengths of isolated indications.
f) Lg + L4 + L5 + L6 = cumulative length of indications in reference surface.
g) The total number of indications in the reference surface is 4 (as identified by Lg, L4, L5 and L6), see Table 2.

Indications which do not meet the applicable minimum requirement:
acceptance criteria shall be considered as defects. a) name of supplier;
Removal of a defect shall be followed by further b) order number;
magnetic particle inspection. Provided that the forging
c) identification of forging(s) under examination;
dimensions remain in tolerance, defects shall be
eliminated by grinding and machining. Elimination of a d) scope of inspection: surface areas and applicable
defect by grinding shall be carried out in the direction quality classes;
perpendicular to the defect and in such a manner as to e) stage of manufacture at which magnetic particle

procedure used (where applicable);
m) results of inspection:
1) location;
