I t gives me great pleasure to be the editor of this issue of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy
Review focusing on the triathlon. This has been a long-standing interest of mine, and I have
invited a stellar and very talented group of authors to contribute to this issue. As you will see,
we have included their “bio,” or their credibility to write on this topic.
The triathlon is one of the most popular recreational activities, and in 2011 there were
almost 3 million participants in sanctioned triathlons, and 43% were over 40 years of age. This
is no longer a young persons’ sport but has become a significant way for the middle-aged
athlete to keep fit and enjoy competition.
We have devoted a little more attention to the world championship Ironman in Kona.
This is the ultimate endurance challenge, to which most triathletes aspire.
I admit that there is a lot of level 5 evidence presented, which is common in a great deal of
sports medicine, but expert opinion, “been there, done that,” in this topic is extremely val-
uable. I would hope that all of you will take away some valuable secrets from these experts and
enhance your next “tri” experience.

Disclosure: The author declares no conflict of interest.
