Q-1: What are ICT tools? and what is their role in our lives?
Ans: ICT tool are modern electronic equipment that are used for acquiring data, processing
it and make the information available.
They utilise the communication technology for acquiring data and making the information
available. They play an important role in our lives. They make our day-to-day work easy.
They enhance our work efficiency and make our lives easier.
Q-2: Explain the difference between RAM and ROM.
Ans: RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It temporarily stores the data that we
provide to the computer for processing. It also temporarily stores the results of processing.
It also called temporary memory because it holds the contents temporarily. When
the power goes off, its contents are permanently deleted.
ROM stands for Read Only Memory. Its contents can only read by a computer. Users
cannot write or modify the contents of this memory. The contents of ROM are written using
special devices.
Q-3: How is a magnetic tape drive similar to the different from a hard disk?
Ans: Both hard disk and tape drive are permanent storage devices.
Hard Disk writes and reads the data randomly while a magnetic tape drive writes and
reads the data sequentially. Hence it is slower in I/O operations than a hard disk.
Q-4: What is the role of software in computer system and what are its type? Define the term
“computer hardware” with a suitable example.
Ans: Software makes the computer hardware work. A computer cannot work without a
Software. Software is of two types, i.e., system software and application software. The
physical part of computer that can be seen or touch is called computer hardware. A CPU,
monitor, keyboard, etc. are examples of hardware.
Q-5: How are files and folder different from each other? Name any three characters that
cannot be used in files names.
Ans: A file is container that holds computer contents in it. In fact, the computer stores all
its information in files. Files are identified by names.

A folder is a special type of file that is capable of holding others files in it. It cannot
store contents as a file does.
The following characters &/ and * cannot be used as a file name.
Q-6: How many types of computers network are there? Name them and state their maximum
span.
Ans: There are four types of computer network. They are as follows:
❖ Local Area Network (LAN)
❖ Wide Area Network (WAN)
❖ Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
❖ Personal Area Network (PAN).
LAN can span a maximum of 1 kilometre. WAN can span all across the globe. MAN can span
all across a city (around 30 to 40 kilometres). PAN spans across a home (10 to 15 meters).
Q-7: What is e-mail? state any five advantages of email.
Ans: Email is internet services using which people send and receive letters over the internet.
❖ It reaches the destination in on time.
❖ It does not get lost in transit.
❖ Documents and files can be sent along with the email.
❖ It can be forwarded to others while you have original copy.
❖ The services is free of cost.
Q-8: What is social media? What are its features?
Ans: “Social Media” means web-based communication tools that enable people to interact
with each other by sharing and consuming information.
