2. Summary

This research paper evaluates the effectiveness of green practices in the Indian manufacturing
sector using CHAID analysis. The study aims to identify sustainable and competitive performers
in the sector and understand the impact of green practices on supply chain management. The
paper reviews literature on green procurement, green process and product design, and green
logistics. The authors find that integrating green practices benefits organizations in multiple
ways, including reducing energy consumption, emissions, and waste, and increasing reuse of
materials. The study recommends that organizations encourage their suppliers to develop new
source reduction strategies and collaborate with them in designing green products. The paper
concludes that a strategic and consistent approach is needed to remodel the supply chain at all
levels to address environmental concerns and increase ecological sustainability. The article
discusses the importance of green supply chain management (GSCM) in maximizing resource
efficiency and promoting eco-friendly practices in manufacturing. It highlights various enablers
of GSCM, such as green procurement, green logistics, green process and product design, and
regulatory frameworks, and their impact on business performance. The study found that green
logistics had the most significant impact on environmental performance, followed by regulatory
framework, green process and product design, and green procurement. The study suggests that
decision-makers should focus on capitalizing on future trends in the supply chain sector and
devising strategies to respond to challenges before they happen.

3. Purpose of the study

The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of green practices in the Indian
manufacturing sector and understand the impact of green practices on supply chain management.

3
The study aims to identify sustainable and competitive performers in the sector and explore the
possibility of improvement in the supply chain after the inclusion of sustainable green practices
on different chain stages. The study also intends to find answers to questions related to
identifying crucial factors responsible for greening the supply chain, measuring the successful
implementation of green practices in the supply chain, and finding out the effectiveness of green
practices on environmental sustainability. The study uses CHAID analysis as the main tool for
impact and effect of sustainable green practices adopted by Indian manufacturing sector.

4. Literature Review

The theoretical framework of the paper is based on the concept of Green Supply Chain
Management (GSCM). The study reviews literature on green procurement, green process and
product design, green logistics, and regulatory frameworks. GSCM is a strategic approach to
integrate environmental concerns into supply chain management to achieve sustainable
development. The framework identifies enablers of GSCM, such as green procurement, green
logistics, green process and product design, and regulatory frameworks, and their impact on
business performance.

The conceptual framework of the paper highlights the importance of a strategic and consistent
approach to remodel the supply chain at all levels to address environmental concerns and
increase ecological sustainability. The framework also emphasizes the need for managerial
intervention to improve the degree of control over the structure of operation and technology
opted by the suppliers in green procurement and to explore the barriers hindering the adoption of
green process and product designs.

The paper makes extensive use of relevant literature to support its arguments and findings. The
authors review literature on green procurement, green process and product design, green
logistics, and regulatory frameworks to develop a theoretical framework for the study. They also
cite previous studies on green supply chain management (GSCM) to highlight the importance of
integrating environmental concerns into supply chain management to achieve sustainable
development.

The paper uses recent literature to support its arguments and findings. For example, the authors
cite a study by Goyal and Kumar (2017) that models the CSR barriers in manufacturing
4
industries. The authors also cite a study by Gaspari et al. (2017) that explores the use of
modularization in material flow simulation for managing production releases in remanufacturing.

In contrary they also cite old literatures, for example a study by Govindan et al. (2014) that
analyzes the barriers to green supply chain management implementation in Indian industries
using analytic hierarchy process. Additionally, the paper cites a study by Santolaria et al. (2011)
that examines eco-design in innovation-driven companies and the main drivers of integration.
The authors also cite a study by Taghdisian et al. (2014) that proposes a multi-objective
optimization approach for green design of a methanol plant based on CO2-efficiency indicator.

The paper mentions four specific research questions that the study aims to answer. These
research questions are:

1. How to identify crucial factors/constructs/variables responsible for greening the supply

chain?
2. What are the dynamics of the relationship among the identified factors, and how does this
relationship impact the implementation of green practices?
3. How do we finally measure the successful implementation of Green practices in the
supply chain?
4. How to find out the effectiveness of green practices on environmental sustainability?

The paper aims to answer these research questions by conducting a survey of 54 manufacturing
organizations in the Pune-Nashik area and analyzing the data using CHAID analysis. The study
also reviews relevant literature on green supply chain management to develop a theoretical
framework for the research. The paper presents the findings of the study and discusses the
implications for organizations and policymakers.

5. The approach/methodology

The research methodology adopted in the paper involves a survey of 54 manufacturing

organizations in the Pune-Nashik area to gather data on the adoption of green practices in the
supply chain. The authors use CHAID analysis to analyze the data and understand the impact of
green practices on supply chain management.

5
The authors first identify the enablers/practices of green supply chain management through a
literature review. They then develop a questionnaire based on the identified enablers/practices
and demographic details of the respondents. The questionnaire is thoroughly vetted and
evaluated by industry and academic professionals.

A cross-sectional survey is conducted to gather data from a sample of Indian manufacturing

plants in the Pune-Nashik area. The questionnaire is addressed to the plant manager, operations
manager, or equivalent decision maker like General Manager and the Vice President. The
respondents vary in work experience and educational background.

The data collected from the survey is analyzed using CHAID analysis to identify the most
significant predictors of environmental performance in the Indian manufacturing sector. The
authors also use the analysis to identify which green practice out of four selected practices
(Green Procurement, Green Logistics, Green Product and Process Design, Regulatory
Frameworks) has the best effect on the environmental performance of the organization.

The authors acknowledge the limitations of the research methodology, such as the small sample
size and the focus on environmental performance only. They suggest that further studies should
be conducted to cover the areas that had to be left unattended in the present investigation.

6. The key findings/contribution of the study

The key finding of the study is that green logistics has a competitive edge over other sustainable
green practices in improving business performance and reducing environmental pollution in
manufacturing organizations in the Pune Nashik area. The study also identified crucial categories
like basic and fabricated metals, electrical goods manufacturing, and optical instruments that
need to consider areas found lacking. The study also found a lack of knowledge and coordination
between the green models selected by the organizations and actual operations conducted by
them. Finally, the study suggests that modern organizations are improvising their manufacturing
style to green manufacturing for competitiveness and for promoting the organization's
environmental and financial performance simultaneously.

The study makes a significant contribution to the field of supply chain management by exploring
the possibility of improving the supply chain in the Indian manufacturing sector through the

6
inclusion of sustainable green practices. The study identifies crucial factors, constructs, and
variables responsible for greening the supply chain and examines the dynamics of the
relationship among these factors and how they impact the implementation of green practices. The
study also proposes a methodology (CHAID analysis) for collecting and analyzing data on the
effectiveness of green practices in supply chain management.

Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the implementation of green practices in the
Indian manufacturing sector and offers recommendations for improving the environmental and
financial performance of organizations. The study's limitations are also acknowledged, and
suggestions for further research are provided.

There is the problem in generalizing large groups. To generalize the findings for larger groups,
the research should be conducted in other organizations, spreading across different cities of the
country. Additionally, the study only measured organizational performance from an
environmental perspective, leaving out economic and social performances.

7. Discussion

The paper discusses the implementation of green supply chain management practices in the
Indian manufacturing sector. The authors identify the lack of knowledge and coordination
between the green models selected by organizations and actual operations conducted by them.
They suggest that a definitive green process-oriented framework, coordination, and cooperation
among crucial players, and flow of control at an individual stage of green process are required to
keep the representation and working of green supply chain smooth by eliminating complexities
rooted within the individual stage of green process and, hence, will impart detail and clarity at
individual and entire process level.

8. Limitations/weaknesses of the paper

The paper has some weaknesses that need to be addressed. Firstly, the study was conducted only
on organizations situated in the Pune Nashik belt, which may limit the generalizability of the
results to larger groups. Therefore, the results of the study cannot be generalized to other regions
of India or other countries. Secondly, the study only measured organizational performance from
an environmental perspective, leaving out economic and social performances. This limits the

7
scope of the study and does not provide a comprehensive view of the impact of green practices
on organizational performance.

Another weakness of the paper is that it does not provide a detailed explanation of the
methodology used to collect and analyze data. The authors only briefly mention the use of a
questionnaire and CHAID analysis, but they do not provide a detailed explanation of how these
methods were used. This lack of detail makes it difficult for readers to understand the validity
and reliability of the study's findings.

Finally, the paper does not provide a clear roadmap for organizations to implement green supply
chain management practices. While the authors identify some barriers and suggest some
solutions, they do not provide a step-by-step guide for organizations to follow. This limits the
practical application of the study's findings and may make it difficult for organizations to
implement green practices effectively.

9. Suggestion for future research

The paper suggests that future research should be conducted to cover the areas that had to be left
unattended in the present investigation. Specifically, the study only measured organizational
performance from an environmental perspective, leaving out economic and social performances.
Therefore, future research should focus on measuring the economic and social performances of
organizations that have implemented green supply chain management practices.

Additionally, the study was conducted only on organizations situated in the Pune Nashik belt,
which may limit the generalizability of the results to larger groups. Therefore, future research
should be conducted in other organizations, spreading across different cities of the country, to
generalize the results for larger groups.

Furthermore, the paper does not provide a clear roadmap for organizations to implement green
supply chain management practices. Therefore, future research should focus on developing a
step-by-step guide for organizations to follow to implement green practices effectively.

Finally, the paper only used CHAID analysis to collect and analyze data. Future research should
explore other data analysis techniques to validate the findings of this study and provide a more
comprehensive understanding of the impact of green practices on organizational performance.
