a. A representative sample was selected consisting of ten boulders, each with a mass of 40-60 g,
to give a total sample mass of 450-550 g. The maximum grain size of the stone should not be
more than 3 mm.

Drum weighing process
b. The sample is placed in a clean drum and dried to a constant mass at 105o C, usually taking 2
to 6 hours in the oven. According to ASTM D4644 the samples were dried overnight (12-16
hours) until they reached a constant mass. The mass of the drum plus the mass of the sample is
recorded as A. The sample is then tested after cooling.

c. The cap is replaced, the drum is installed in the body and coupled to the motor.
d. The trough is filled with slaking fluid, usually tap water at 20o C, to a height of 20 mm below
the drum axis, and the drum is rotated for 200 revolutions over a 10-minute period to an
accuracy of 0.5 minutes.

e. The drum is removed from the bath, the lid is removed from the drum, and the retained portion
of the sample is dried to a constant mass at 105o C in an oven. The mass of the drum plus the
portion of the sample retained after cooling is recorded as B.
f. Steps (c) - (e) are repeated and the drum mass plus the retained sample portion is recorded as
C.
g. The drum was brushed clean and the mass was recorded as D
h. The slake-durability index (second cycle) was calculated as the ratio of the mass percentage of
the final and initial dry samples.
i. The minimum cycle of slake durability testing is 2 times, but it can increase depending on the
strength of the rock sample.
The durability index (second cycle) was calculated as the ratio of the mass percentage of the final
and initial dry samples as follows:
𝐶−𝐷
Durability Index, 𝐼𝑑(2) (%) = ( ) × 100
𝐴−𝐷
The results of the treatment of drying and wetting cycles for 5 cycles can affect changes in dry
weight (Table 1).
Tabel 1.
Durability Index
Durability Index (%)
Sample
Id (1) Id (2) Id (3) Id (4) Id (5)
3 93.59 92.42 91.25 90.38 89.50
The results of the Durability Index show a change in weight with the addition of cycles, the greater
the percentage of the durability index, the greater the resistance of the rock to weathering, which
means the rock is getting stronger.
