Parts of Speech
1. Words are divided into different kinds or classes, called Parts of Speech. The parts of speech are eight in
number :-
1. Noun.
2. Adjective.
3. Pronoun.
4. Verb.
5. Adverb.
6. Preposition
7. Conjunction.
8. Interjection.

A Noun is a word used as the name of a person, place or thing, as,

Akbar was a great King.
Calcutta is on the Hooghly.
The rose smells sweet.
The sun shines bright.
His courage won him honour.
Note.- The word thing includes (i) all objective that we can see, hear, taste, touch or smell; and (ii)
something that we can think of, but cannot perceive by the senses.
2. An Adjective is a word used to add something to the meaning of a noun; as,
He is a brave boy.
There are twenty boys in this class.
3. A Pronoun is a word used instead of a noun; as,
John is absent, because he is ill.
The books are where you left them.
4. A Verb is a word to express an action or state; as,
The girl wrote a letter to her cousin.
Calcutta is a big town.
Iron and copper are useful metals.
5. An Adverb is a word used to add something to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb; as,
He worked the sum quickly.
This flower is very beautiful.
She pronounced the word quite correctly.
6. A Preposition is a word used with a noun or a pronoun to show how the person or thing denoted by the
noun or pronoun stands in relation to something else; as,
There is a cow in the garden.
The girl is found of music.
A fair little girl sat under a tree.
7. A Conjunction is a word used to join words or sentences: as,
Rana and Hari are cousins.
Two and two make four.
I ran fast, but missed the train.
8. An Interjection is a word which expresses some sudden feeling as,
Hurrah! We have won the game.
Alas! She is dead.
9. Some modern grammars include determiners among the parts of speech. Determiners are words like a,
an, the, this, that, these, those, every, each, some, any, my, his, one, two etc, which determine or limit the
meaning of the nouns that follow. In this book, as in many traditional grammars, all determiners except
a, an andthe are classed among adjectives.
4

10. As words are divided into different classes according to the work they do in sentences, it is clear that we
cannot say to which part of speech a word belongs unless we see it used in a sentence.
They arrived soon after. (Adverb)
They arrived after us. (Preposition)
They arrived after we had left. (Conjunction)

From the above examples we see that the same word can be used as different parts of speech.

for the classification:-

What are articles:
A or An and The are usually called articles. But they belong to adjective. They are used to indicate a noun
definitely or indefinitely.

There are two kinds of articles: 1. Indefinite article and 2. Definite article.

A and An are used as indefinite article. They are used to indicate a noun indefinitely.

A/An and One

➢ Wait here for one (or a) minute and I’ll be with you.
➢ She scored one (or a) hundred and eighty points.
(Using one in sentences like these give a little more emphasis to the number.)

rather than two or more.
➢ Are you staying just one night?

5

➢ 50 pence a litre
➢ A week or two
➢ A few a little a huge number of
4. We use a before words that begin with consonant sound. Some words start with a vowel letter but begin
with a consonant sound, so we use a before these words, too:
➢ A university a European a one-parent family
5. We use an before words that begin with a vowel sound:
➢ An orange an Italian an umbrella
6. These include words that begin with a silent letter ‘h’:
➢ An hour an heir an honest child
7. Abbreviations said as individual letters that begin with A, E, F,H, I, L, M, N, O, R, S or X:
➢ An MP an FBI an IOU
8. But compare abbreviations said as words:
➢ A NATO a FIFA

9. After ‘many’ and before ‘must’ we use ‘a’ if it indicates a singular noun:

Voice is the form of verb which shows whether the subject does something or something has been done to
it. Read the following examples:

Hasan writes a letter.

A letter is written by Hasan.

Forming Passive Sentences

A.
Passive verb forms have one of the tenses of the verb to be (am, is, are, was, were, have been, has been,
had been, shall be, will be etc.) and a past participle.
Verbs which take an object (transitive verbs) can have a passive form. So we can make corresponding
passive sentences for:

They destroyed the building. ↔ The building was destroyed.

The news surprised me. ↔ I was surprised by the news.

Verbs which do not take an object (intransitive verbs) do not have passive forms. For example, there
are no passive forms of the following sentences:

I slept for nearly ten hours last night.

The ship slowly disappeared from the view.

However, many verbs can be used at different times with or without objects-that is, thy can be both
transitive and intransitive. Compare:

Are they meeting him at the airport? (Transitive) ↔ Is he being met at the airport?
When shall we meet? (Intransitive; no passive is possible)
B.
Verbs that can be followed byobject+object or object+prepositional object in active clause can have two
corresponding passive forms. The passive form you choose depends on which is more appropriate in a
particular context. Compare:

She handed me the plate. ↔ I was handed the plate.

She handed the plate to me. ↔ The plate was handed to me.
Other verbs like this include demonstrate, explain, promise, sell, teach, tell, throw. However, verbs that
can’t be followed by object+object in the active have only one of these passive forms.
He described me the situation. ↔ I was described the situation. (Wrong)
He described the situation to me. ↔ The situation was described to me.

EXERCISE
Complete these sentences with the verbs within brackets. Use the passive form.
a. Rana is a good player. He ------ (make) captain of our team. b. He is looking for the pen. But the pen---
-- (steal) yesterday. c. A man----- (know) by the company he keeps. d. My mother was ill. She -----
(send) to hospital. e. There was a train accident. Many people ------ (injure).
