Preparatory Activity Assessment 1: INTERVIEW

I interviewed Jan Rochelle Francisquete, an 18-year-old Ateneo de Davao University

student currently residing in General Santos City. She’s a first-year student and took the Life

and Works of Rizal course last semester, A.Y. 2022-2023. I asked her a few questions in

connection to the course; I asked her, “How was your experience in this course?” I asked her

this because I wanted to see how other students felt as they took the course. She replied, “My

experience learning in this course was fun because my professor made an interactive way to

learn more about Rizal’s life and works.” after that, I asked the following question, “What was

one topic you were interested in during the Rizal course and Why?” in this question, I asked

her because I wanted to know what topic I should also look forward to as I take the course. She

said, “The topic that interested me in the course was the R.A 1425 and its controversial

background in the senate. because you get to learn (as students) why we need to learn LWR

and how it influences us, the youth today.” The last question I asked her was, “How would you

relate this course to our modern generation today? Was this course beneficial to everyone,

especially to students?” I let this be the last question because I was curious why students in the

Philippines should take this course. She answered, “The course manifests patriotism and

nationalism, which is why this bill was pushed and fought to become a law so the youth would

instill pride for their homeland and its history.” I thanked her as we ended our short interview

via Google Meet call.

The questions I've created aren't simply random filler for the interview; they're designed

to assist me in examining the path I'm going to follow. The first question I constructed was to

know what to expect in this course and how I should take the course seriously to have a smooth
flow. I created, “How was your experience in this course?” and asking the interviewee helped

me know how the course was interesting from other students’ perspectives. The second

question means that I wanted to look forward to a particular topic that will be discussed in this

course; I then constructed the question, “What was one topic you were interested in during the

Rizal course and Why?” it made me intrigued when the interviewee said her answer and was

looking forward in learning that topic. The last question I constructed popped into my head as

I heard about this course during the pre-registration period; I asked this myself and wanted to

know why this course is crucial for us students in our generation. It will help me understand

how this course will still be applicable in our modern era as we keep being reminded of our

history. The last question was, “How would you relate this course to our modern generation

today? Was this course beneficial to everyone, especially students?”. These are the questions I

constructed and its explanation or rationale.

This interview provided information on the course I am taking this semester. This

course has the potential to be a significant amount of fun to talk about. Just about all of my

expectations were met by my interviewee, particularly in terms of engagement and course

activities. I anticipated this course to develop my mind in critical thinking and writing; thus, I

already expected essay-like assignments to be included. What she mentioned about the course's

relevance and ramifications in today's society gave me a sense of resolve. As a student just

beginning the course, I would want to prepare and brace myself by studying history, what it

means to be Filipino, and how we should look up to the works of our national hero.
