Lesson #2
My second university law lesson was a valuable learning experience as I deepened
my understanding of the laws that govern businesses in different nations and how they can
impact their success. One of the most surprising things I learned was that Singapore is
considered the best nation to start a business due to its favourable laws and regulations.
This was a revelation to me as I had always thought that the United States would be at the
top of the list (the US is only at the 7th place). I found it utterly interesting how at the top of
the list were almost only Asian / eastern Countries. As pointed out by the professor, the
reason for this revolves around the absence of workers' unions and workers’ rights in
general in these countries, making it easier to open businesses there.
However, this class helped me realise that there are many other factors to consider when
starting a business, and the laws and regulations of a nation play a crucial role in
determining its success.

During the class, my classmates presented a law currently going through the process
of being approved. They shared their comments and opinions on the law, and it was
interesting to see the different perspectives and arguments presented. However, what I
found most striking was that most of the laws formulated are never approved. This made
me realise that creating and passing laws is not as straightforward as I had previously
thought but rather a complex and nuanced process. It also highlighted the importance of
having a deep understanding of the laws that are being proposed and the impact they may
have on society.

One of the most exciting topics we discussed was the relationship between power,
legitimacy, and authority. This was something I had never considered before, and it was
enlightening to see how these three concepts are interconnected and how they can affect
how laws are enforced and perceived by society.
This knowledge will benefit my daily life as it will help me understand the political and social
context of the laws and regulations that govern our society.

Overall, this class helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the laws that govern
businesses and how they can impact their success. It also provided me with valuable insights
into the process of creating and passing laws and the relationship between power,
legitimacy, and authority. This knowledge will benefit me in my daily life as it will help me
make informed decisions and navigate the legal system more effectively.
