Let A = [a] be the matrix of order 1, then determinant of A is defined to be equal to a. For a 2×2 Matrix
The determinant is: |A| = ad − bc or the
determinant of A equals a × d minus b × c. It is easy to remember when you think of a cross, where blue is positive that goes diagonally from left to right and red is negative that goes diagonally from right to left. For a 2×2 Matrix (example) For a 3×3 Matrix
The determinant is: |A| = a (ei − fh) − b (di − fg)
+ c (dh − eg). For a 3×3 Matrix
As a formula (remember the vertical bars || mean
“determinant of”): For a 3×3 Matrix (example) For 4×4 Matrices and Higher The pattern continues for the determinant of a matrix 4×4: ❑ plus a times the determinant of the matrix that is not in a’s row or column, ❑ minus b times the determinant of the matrix that is not in b’s row or column, ❑ plus c times the determinant of the matrix that is not in c’s row or column, ❑ minus d times the determinant of the matrix that is not in d’s row or column, For 4×4 Matrices and Higher THEOREM 1 (Switching Rows) Example THEOREM 2 (Multiplying a Row by a Scalar) Example THEOREM 3 (Scalar Multiplication) Example THEOREM 3 (Adding a Multiple of a Row to Another Row) Example Example THEOREM 4 (Determinant of a Product) Example Example THEOREM 5 (The Determinant of the Transpose) THEOREM 6 (The Determinant of the Inverse) A new method to compute the determinant of the third order Conclusion This new method, comparing with other known methods, is one of the most usable ones, based on quickness and easiness of computing the third order determinant. Furthermore, this new method enables the further research in computing methods of higher than third order determinants. What is more, a new method, enabling the sum computation of two third order determinants will be possible by combining the schemes of this method.
