Sources of Water: Maynilad / Angat Dam
The Angat, Ipo, and La Mesa Dams are the primary water supplies for Metro Manila. The La Mesa and
Balara Treatment Plants then take the water from these dams and turn it into clean, drinkable water
(Metropolitan Waterwork and Service System, 2022).
Ipo Dam receives water directly from Angat Dam, which serves as the city's main water source. The
water then flows 6.4 kilometers to Bicti before flowing through five aqueducts, each of which is roughly 16
kilometers long, to the La Mesa Dam and the La Mesa Portal. 60% of the flow departs from the La Mesa Portal
and flows to the neighboring La Mesa Treatment Plant, from which another 40% makes a second trip of 6.8
kilometers to the Balara Treatment Plant. With relatively little electromechanical equipment, the La Mesa Water
Treatment Plant primarily uses gravity to transport raw water from the source into the plant and out into the
distribution system. It also uses water's hydraulic qualities to backwash its filter (Metropolitan Waterwork and
Service System, 2022).
Quality of Water:
According to Maynilad News, Maynilad has consistency in providing a good quality water to the public,
with a 100% satisfactory compliance rating from the Metro Manila Drinking Water Quality Monitoring
Committee (MMDWQMC). This rating ensures that the water is safe and clean for drinking and cooking
(Maynilad News, 2012).
However, there are still some problems that we, consumers experiencing. First water shortage, during
summer the dams reach their critical level which will result to minimizing the water supply in each municipality
in Metro Manila. Another problem was, during rainy season the water gets muddy and have a foul smell, maybe
because the pipes have leaks that might cause the contamination of rainwater to the water supply.
Water Treatment and Purification:
With a multi-stage process that includes Pressurized Media Filtration, Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis,
and Chlorine Disinfection, the ModTPs of Maynilad utilise treatment technology from Israel—a recognized
global pioneer in water innovation (Maynilad, 2022).
Maynilad maintains and operates four world-class water treatment plants. With a maximum design
capacity of 1,500 million liters per day, La Mesa Treatment Plant 1 is a conventional-type plant (MLD). The
American firm Camp, Dresser, and McKee was in charge of its design. With a design capacity of 900 MLD, La
Mesa Treatment Plant 2 is a pulsator-type facility. It was created by French business Degrémont, a water
treatment plant expert in the world. Maynilad's water treatment process complies with international standards
for Quality Management and Environmental Management thanks to the certification of both treatment facilities
to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and OHSAS 18001:2007. A membrane-based water treatment facility,
Putatan Water Treatment Plant 2 has a design capacity of 150 MLD. To guarantee that drinkable water is
delivered, it treats water using a modern, multi-stage procedure. The Department of Health's Philippine National
Standards for Drinking Water (PNSDW) are met by all four water treatment plants' output (DOH) (Maynilad,
2022).
