Angels and Demons

A Book Review by Angelyn L. Barrientos

Dan Brown's novel "Angels and

Demons" is a gripping and fast-paced
thriller that takes the reader on a thrilling
journey through the heart of the Vatican
City. This novel is the first in the Robert
Langdon series, which has gone on to
become one of the most popular and
bestselling series of all time.

The novel opens with the murder of a

prominent scientist, who is a member of
the Swiss research facility CERN. The
murder is a gruesome one, with the victim's
chest branded with the word "Illuminati,"
and this sets off a chain of events that will
take Robert Langdon, a Harvard symbologist, on a frantic race against time to
stop a catastrophic event from taking place.

Langdon is soon contacted by the Vatican, who inform him that they
believe the Illuminati, a secret society of scientists that were thought to have
been disbanded centuries ago, are behind the murder and that they have
kidnapped four cardinals who are due to participate in the upcoming Papal
Conclave. The Illuminati have threatened to kill one cardinal per hour and to
use a stolen canister of antimatter to destroy the Vatican City.

Langdon is joined on his quest to save the cardinals and stop the
Illuminati by Vittoria Vetra, a CERN scientist who was also involved in the
creation of the stolen antimatter. Together they embark on a thrilling
adventure through the streets and landmarks of Rome, deciphering ancient
symbols and clues in an attempt to uncover the Illuminati's plot.

The plot of "Angels and Demons" is intricate and complex, with

numerous twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end.
Dan Brown does an excellent job of weaving historical and scientific facts into
the narrative, creating a compelling and believable storyline that draws the
reader in and keeps them engaged.

One of the most impressive aspects of this novel is Brown's attention to

detail. He paints a vivid picture of the Vatican City, describing its architecture,
artwork, and history in great detail, which adds to the authenticity of the
story. The use of ancient symbols and clues adds a layer of depth to the

narrative, making it more than just a simple thriller and turning it into an
intellectual puzzle for the reader to solve alongside Langdon and Vetra.

The characters in "Angels and Demons" are well-developed and

interesting. Langdon is a likable protagonist, with his intelligence, quick
thinking, and calm under pressure making him the perfect hero for this type
of story. Vittoria Vetra is an equally compelling character, with her scientific
knowledge and determination making her an excellent counterpart to
Langdon.

Overall, "Angels and Demons" is an excellent novel that is sure to keep

readers on the edge of their seats. Dan Brown's writing style is engaging and
easy to read, with short chapters that make it difficult to put the book down.
The novel is a perfect blend of action, mystery, and historical and scientific
facts, making it a must-read for anyone who enjoys a thrilling and intelligent
story.

However, it is worth noting that some readers may take issue with the
book's portrayal of the Catholic Church, which is depicted as being corrupt
and having numerous secrets that they are willing to protect at any cost.
While this is a work of fiction, some readers may find the portrayal of the
church offensive or inaccurate.

In conclusion, "Angels and Demons" is a well-written and engaging

novel that is sure to delight fans of Dan Brown's work and anyone who enjoys
a good thriller. The novel's intricate plot, attention to detail, and interesting
characters make it a must-read for anyone looking for a gripping and
intelligent story.

As the saying goes “May angels be your guide to the path of

illumination”.
