PIECE 1:Caged Bird

BY Maya Angelou

A free bird lean

on the back of the wind

and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wing
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks

down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze

and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill

of things unknown
but longed for still
and his ton the distant hill
sings of freedom.

MAYA ANGELOU
Piece 2-An Article
By Anti-Defamation League (ADL)

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, an African American man, was killed while being arrested
by the police. A bystander video recording of the incident showed that a white police officer
pinned Floyd to the ground while he was handcuffed. The police officer’s knee pressed into
the back of Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes, even after Floyd lost consciousness. On
the video, Floyd was heard saying, "Please, I can't breathe. My stomach hurts. My neck
hurts. Everything hurts. … (I need) water or something. Please. Please. I can't breathe,
officer. … I cannot breathe. I cannot breathe."

A video taken by a bystander of the incident was shared widely on social media. This led to
community and national outrage, an F.B.I. civil rights investigation and the firing of the
officer, Derek Chauvin and three other officers who were also at the scene. On May 29, 2020
Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. On June 3,
the charges against Chauvin were upgraded to second-degree murder and the three other
officers were charged with aiding and abetting murder.

Piece 3-A song based on inequality.
By Cynthia Enrivo

Lyrics

I been walking

With my face turned to the sun

Weight on my shoulders

A bullet in my gun

Oh, I got eyes in the back of my head

Just in case I have to run

I do what I can when I can while I can for my people

While the clouds roll back and the stars fill the night

That's when I'm gonna stand up

Take my people with me

Together we are going

To a brand new home

Far across the river

Can you hear freedom calling?

Calling me to answer

Gonna keep on keepin' on

I can feel it in my bones

Early in the mornin'

Before the sun begins to shine

We're gonna start movin'

Towards that separating line

I'm wadin' through muddy waters

You know I got a made up mind

And I don't mind if I lose any blood on the way to salvation

And I'll fight with the strength that I got until I die

So I'm gonna stand up

Take my people with me

Together we are going

To a brand new home

Far across the river

Can you hear freedom calling?

Calling me to answer

Gonna keep on keepin' on

And I know what's around the bend

Might be hard to face 'cause I'm alone

And I just might fail

But Lord knows I tried

Sure as stars fill up the sky

Stand up

Take my people with me

Together we are going

To a brand new home

Far across the river

Can you hear freedom calling?

Calling me to answer

Gonna keep on keepin' on

I'm gonna stand up

Take my people with me

Together we are going

To a brand new home

Far across the river

Do you hear freedom calling?

Calling me to answer
Gonna keep on keepin' on

I'm gonna stand up

Take my people with me

Together we are going

To a brand new home

Far across the river

I hear freedom calling

Calling me to answer

Gonna keep on keepin' on

I can feel it in my bones

I go to prepare a place for you

I go to prepare a place for you

I go to prepare a place for you

I go to prepare a place for you

REFLECTION 1
My first artefact is a Poem ‘Caged Bird’ written by Maya Angelou ,is a protest poem that
voices out the inequality between black and white americans. This affects my thinking due
to the inequality amongst us and this shows us that your color would determine how you
shall be treated. My second artefact, is An Article ‘George Floyd,Racism and Law
Enforcement’ written by, Anti-Defamation League. This article is basically about a 46 year
old, black african man who was murdered in Minneapolis,Minnesota by Derek Chauvin, a
44 year old, white police officer. This article shows us Police brutality,Racism and Lack of
police accountability. It changes the way I think because it simply tells us that there is
persistent inequality and systematic injustice against Black Americans that would become
a major wake up call for all.My third artefact is a song ‘Stand Up’ sung by Cynthia Erivo.
It is Based on resistance to slavery and an expression of strength. This song tells us how
things change and how they move.
Reflection 2
In the poem Symbolism is shown: The poem is filled with symbols. The caged and free
birds are symbolic representations of white and black Americans respectively. The cage in
itself represents the ghetto neighborhoods such as Southside Chicago where the blacks are
restricted to, for accommodation. Even with the ramshackle buildings, they are made to pay
more tenement fees than necessary. These techniques are used to draw attention to the
character/s or settings. In piece 2 Reflection Metaphors of race is shown.Piece 3 compare and
contrast is used to attract the person listening to the song.
REFLECTION 3
Taking part in this Group School Based Assessment has taught me how to cooperate, manage
time and form a better way of having order in anything I do.My communicating skills have
developed and grown with the work done within the group but i also realized that i have a minor
weakness when asking for assistance so with that there’s room for improvement. When
researching my subtopic,I gained a better understanding of Society and how it had a major
impact on World Wide.During this research,I realized that there would always be inequality
amongst everyone.Exploring my artefacts and Constructing my reflections have helped my
Language skills to improve.and also helped me to understand that there’s a message and purpose
to each of my pieces that has an effective impact on viewers.
ORAL PRESENTATION
I will present a poem authorized , “Free Just Free”, to express my embitterment
On how racial injustice affects black lives. My piece was influenced by the death of George
Floyd, and it uses oppression to have an effective impact on blacks so that they would know to
stand up and look out for one another.
Group Written Report

The members of our group investigated the different aspects of Race ,Like (BLM) Black Lives
Matter,Bi-Racial identity,Colourism in the Caribbean,Racial/Ethnic persecution: “Mass
Extermination or Ethnic Cleansing?”and Racial Discrimination. These Artifacts were quite a
challenge as they were widely discussed in the media ,and it was hard to find one that
emphasized the topics that were chosen. In total, our group has fifteen (15) artifacts from which to
choose.

The three artifacts that were chosen are the articles “50 shades of black:My Experience with
Colourism” by Allen Amaya, the spoken word “Angry Black Woman” by Cezzane,Imani and the
song “I can't breathe” by H.E.R. Our group met during English A classes and through an online
group and chose the most informative and interesting artifacts.

The first artifact “50 shades of black:My Experience with Colourism” this shows taught us what
it is like that we live in a world where people see lighter is better, but we are all the same no
matter our shade we should be treated equally

The second artifact “Angry Black Woman” we learned that being a black woman we are placed
in this stereotype to be loud and angry, but they don’t know what they are truly angry for.How
being black and a woman, people tell them how to act,how to comb their hair even in today’s
modern society. And the way white women mock their heritage this leads for the speaker to voice
all the frustrations of being a black woman and why they are always angry.

The third artifact taught us the injustice black people face and how there is no one to stand up for
them.Their pain towards how many lives were lost for being their skin color. (293 words)
