A. Meaning, essence, nature and purposes of religion and spirituality B. Spirituality versus religion
Spirituality and religion are both concerned with determining the purpose of life. Spirituality is
more of an individual activity that involves feeling at peace and having a sense of purpose. Religion is a
system of structured ideas and behaviors that are often shared by a community or group.
Psychodynamic approaches in understanding religion and spirituality
Psychology is a multi-systems scientific field that studies religious behavior patterns in order to
gain a better understanding of religious consciousness. In order to allow self-transformation,
psychoanalysis as a discipline may generate a less reductionistic spiritual hermeneutics and decenter the
ego and self. Analysts can be attentive to the significance of values, purpose, and ultimate meaning in
their patients' life.
Humanistic and transpersonal approaches to religion and spirituality
Spiritual psychology is a branch of psychology that incorporates the spiritual and transcendent
components of human experience within the framework of modern psychology. Humanists think that
each of us creates our own spiritual meaning; we are accountable for our own spirituality. To reach that
sense of spiritual significance, we have a strong need to connect with something bigger than ourselves.
Personality theory in understanding religion and spirituality
Spirituality refers to the guiding ideas and standards that define and assess the decisions we make
in life. It outlines what is proper and bad in man's behavior or conduct with his fellowman. When you are
ill, it might help you experience inner strength and result in a speedier recovery. Spirituality has been
linked to five personality traits in certain studies, including extraversion, openness, and compassion.
Positive Psychology
Researchers have discovered particular brain circuitry associated with people's spirituality, which
is focused in a brain area associated with pain suppression, benevolence, and unconditional love. The
findings contribute to studies aimed at elucidating the molecular foundation of human spirituality. The
study of the characteristics and virtues that allow people, communities, and organizations to thrive is
known as positive psychology.
1. How is spirituality related to health? 2. What is the impact of spirituality on mental health?
Spirituality may help you cope with stress by providing you with a feeling of purpose, calm, and
forgiveness. It is typically more necessary at times of emotional stress or disease. Improving your
spiritual health will not cure you of your sickness, but it will make you feel better. Religion, meditation,
and prayer may provide positive beliefs, comfort, and strength, all of which can lead to happiness.
A. David Elkind: The Cognitive Development Tradition B. Elements of Religion in the Child (D.
Elkind)
According to psychologist David Elkind, teenagers go through a stage of self-absorption that
causes them to only perceive the world through their own eyes. Many of the characteristics that people
associate with typical teenage behavior might be attributed to egocentrism. Around the age of two, the
youngster demonstrates that he or she has mastered the symbolic function. Similarly, religious symbols
are produced to symbolize various aspects of the belief system.
James Fowler: Theory of Faith Development, Stages of Faith Development
The pre-stage, infancy, and undifferentiated faith occur throughout infancy and are defined by
newborns' knowledge that they are independent creatures from their parents. Stage 1 Intuitive-Projective
Faith is followed by Mythic Literal Faith, Synthetic-Conventional Faith, and Individuative-Reflective
Faith. The final stages of faith formation are Conjunctive Faith Stage 5 and Universalizing Faith Stage 6.
Fritz Oser: Theory of religious development
Religious judgment is the process by which an individual reconstructs his or her experience
through the lens of a personal relationship with God. Religious development is concerned with the age-
related, meaning-making elements of this rebuilding.
