Topic 4: IT systems

1. Draw a data flow diagram for the following system:

 A theatre uses a computerised booking system to keep records of customers, plays and
bookings.
 A customer may make a booking in person, by telephone or by preprinted form.
 The booking clerk first has to check whether there are any seats free for the
performance.
 If there are, the clerk reserves the seats, then checks whether the customer’s details are
already on file.
 If not, the clerk types them in.
 The tickets are then printed out and handed or sent to the customer.
 Payment is either in cash or by credit card.

2. Draw a data flow diagram for the following system:

 A cinema takes bookings electronically to allocate tickets.


 A customer must make a booking in person.
 The salesperson checks that there are tickets available for that showing.
 If necessary, the salesperson checks the customer’s age.
 If they are old enough, the seats are reserved.
 Tickets are printed out and given to the customer.

3. Choose one part of the theatre computerised booking system. Draw a flowchart to
show how this part of the system will work.

4. Create an idea for a new computer game. Decompose your idea down into its
subprograms and draw a structure diagram to show the design for your game.
