ACTIVITY #1

1. Define urban geography

Urban geography is a subfield of human geography that focuses on the study of cities, their
structure, and their functions. It examines the physical, economic, social, and political aspects of
urban areas and the processes that shape them, including urbanization, migration, suburbanization,
gentrification, and urban renewal. Urban geography seeks to understand how cities function, how
they are organized, and how they change over time, as well as how people interact with and are
affected by urban environments. It also explores the spatial distribution of urban activities and the
factors that influence the location of different urban functions, such as housing, commerce, industry,
transportation, and public services.

2. Cite differences of urban geography from physical geography

Urban geography is the study of cities and human settlements, while physical geography is the study
of natural features and processes of the earth's surface.

A. Urban geography focuses on human settlements and the built environment, while physical
geography focuses on natural landscapes, such as mountains, rivers, and climate.
B. Urban geography has practical applications in urban planning, public policy, and environmental
management. Physical geography has applications in fields such as natural resource
management, climate change, and disaster mitigation.
C. Urban geography studies the spatial patterns and dynamics of cities and metropolitan regions at
different scales, from the local to the global. Physical geography examines the natural features of
the earth's surface at a range of scales, from local landscapes to global climate patterns.

3. . What is the significance of studying urban geography?

Studying urban geography is significant for several reasons:

Understanding the spatial organization of cities, Examining the social and economic processes that
shape urban life, Addressing urban issues and challenges and Studying the relationship between
cities and their surrounding regions

Overall, studying urban geography helps us better understand the complex and dynamic nature of
cities and the factors that influence their growth, development, and sustainability.
