BARRY Y.

DELOS SANTOS
DEFINING THE SELF: PERSONAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL PERSPECTIVES ON SELF AND
IDENTITY
LESSON 1: THE SELF FROM VARIOUS PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE

ANSWERS:

NOTE PRESENTATION
 I am Barry Delos Santos, 24 years old, living in Fernandez Drive, Pasonanca,
Zamboanga City. Right now, I'm active in the organization I joined. So, for you to know
me, I'm a type of sensitive person who doesn't mix too much with anyone, especially
since I don't know them. But I am an approachable person and adapt when necessary
and sometimes I prefer to be with people who have a sense of humor. I love to play
basketball and I do or participate in many outdoor activities and it is related to the
organization I belong to. One of my weaknesses is that I trust the people around me too
much and one of my strengths is that I am an independent person, I am active in my
social media life and I also like to play online games because that is where I spend my
free time. But before I finish my story, I will leave quotes "It always seems impossible
until it's done".

ANALYSIS
EASY

 It's easy because it's only about myself, what my personality is, what behavior I have
and what my current activities are doing.

APPLICATION
1. “I think therefore I am” -Rene Descartes.
 “I think; therefore, I am” was the end of the search Descartes conducted for a statement
that could not be doubted. He found that he could not doubt that he himself existed, as
he was the one doing the doubting in the first place.

2. “The unexamined life is not worth living” -Socrates.

 According to Socrates “the unexamined life is not worth living”. The most important part
of life is examining your choices and beliefs using rationality and determining if they are
valid. If a person chooses not lead an unexamined life, they would find that their life
lacks value and they would be unhappy.

3. “He who is not a good servant will not be a good master”-Plato.

 A good master is one who has mastered himself or herself. To master oneself means
conquering one’s proneness to selfishness by reaching out and sharing with others
through service. Just like a good teacher must be a good student by recognizing the
importance of learning from those whom he or she teaches. You can’t be a good teacher
without being a learner first. You can’t be a good master without being a good servant.
To be a master without being a servant is to be a dictator.

REFLECTION

Philosopher: Plato
 I choose Plato because of his beliefs: Plato believes that conflicting interests of
different parts of society can be harmonized. The best, rational and righteous, political
order, which he proposes, leads to a harmonious unity of society and allows each of its
parts to flourish, but not at the expense of others.
