EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake is the shaking of the earth’s surface due to the sudden release of energy
within the earth, thus creating seismic waves. Indonesia’s geographical location which is on Ring
of Fire route makes Indonesia often experience earthquake. Based on the cause, earthquakes are
divided in to 3 types, namely volcanic earthquake, tectonic earthquake, and collapse earthquake.
Earthquake occur duo to the movement of the earth plates which causes the earth’s
surface to vibrate. The considerable force that comes from the movement of the plates makes the
rock on the plates stiffen. As a result, the earth’s plates can change shape, and the plates can
event break or return to their original shape if the force is lost.
Within a certain periode of time, the rocks on the plate will slowly change shape or
deform. When the rock hardens or stiffens, it’s potential energy continues to increase. Then the
energy will be release when the plate moves or breaks. The occurrence of vibrations on the
earth’s surface is caused by this energy. The greater the energy released, the more vibrations will
be felt.
There is a difference between a fault and seismic earthquake waves. A fault occurs then a
plate breaks into two or more pieces, and each piece moves away from the other. Seismic
earthquake waves occur when waves travel along the erath’s surface. The hypocenter is the point
of the earthquake on the seabed, while the epicenter in the point of the earthquake on land.
The unit for measuring earthquake strength is the richter scale, which is based on the
amplitude or graph of seismic waves on a seismogram. The measurement of earthquake strength
start from 1.0-1.0. and the energy of the earthquake can increase large by about 32 times every 1
scale increase.
Earthquake disaster cannot be predicted when they will occur. It can happen anytime.
Areas that often experience earthquake are areas that are on the Ring of Fire route because the
area is mostly surrounded by volcanoes. The closer the earthquake source is to recidential areas,
the greater the impact felt.
