Status bar
Communications Status
Displays the current communications method (GSM or HTTP). If GSM is selected, the bars will display the signal
strength of the modem.
If you have green bars showing, this means the GSM signal is good and you should not experience any problems
with GSM communications.
If the bars are yellow, this means the signal is low and you should, ideally, be looking to relocate the modem to increase
the signal strength or consider using a high-gain GSM antenna. A poor signal can cause a number of problems and
should be rectified as a priority.
A red bar indicates a very low signal. This can and will cause problems.
Red/grey flashing bars indicate no signal or the modem has failed or lost connection. If this is the case, make sure
you have the correct modem selected in Settings – Select Modem Port.
If problems still persist exit the CPSM3 software by clicking File – Exit. In the window that pops up, click Shutdown.
Disconnect both the power lead and USB lead to the modem and leave unplugged for 10 seconds then reconnect.
Restart the CPSM3 software and try again.
If you are still experiencing problems and are sure the modem is functioning correctly you may need to try:
If everything has been checked and verified and problems still exist this could indicate a problem with the actual
modem itself. If, in the unlikely event, this is the case, please return the modem for diagnosis and repair/replacement.
If MERLIN XT satellite monitors have been installed on the system, this status bar confirms satellite
communications are operating correctly.

Communications Settings
Opens the Communications Settings window where you can select GSM or HTTP Communications.
Opens the Satellite Communications Setup Wizard for configuring Satellite Communications.
User Alerts
If ticked, this option provides alerts when there are GSM signal or network problems at the CPSM3.
If ticked, this option displays a pop-up bubble at the bottom of the screen when a message has been received.
Configure Channels
Opens the Channel Maintenance window where you can edit Channel Names, Values and Type. Channel changes
here will affect all units.
When enabled, this feature sets aside all MERLIN reports so they can be collected using the CPSM3 export web
service. This provides an automated method of exporting CPSM3's data into a 3rd-party software system.
Advanced
CPSM3 Settings
Allows you to add a description of the CPSM3 system which will allow the alert recipients to identify the source of
any alert messages.
Allows you to set the next Report Time. This time will be used by CPSM3 when installing locations.
The first location will be instructed to report on the selected day and at the selected time. Each subsequent location
will then be set to report in 2 minutes after its predecessor.
This operation will send a Reset command to a MERLIN XT satellite monitor and will tell the monitor to enter
"Installation Mode". The monitor will then try to install itself on to CPSM3's database.
Once installed, the monitor can be controlled, renamed, moved and configured.
CPSM3 Settings
The CPSM3 Settings window allows you to apply a name and description to the system. Information added in here will be
added to the Subject field of Email Alerts.
Please note: Alerts sent via SMS will not contain this information.
Description Field
Please add a description of this CPSM3 system, which will allow the alert recipients to identify the source of any
alert messages.
Secondary CPSM
If this CPSM3 is to be used as a secondary system (i.e. HQ2), tick this box. This is important in systems where
there are two HQ's because there may be times when a conflict of settings can occur. The primary HQ is
responsible for allocating reporting time slots and the secondary HQ simply mirrors the primary HQ.
This option is only available for systems running in server mode for iCPSM (internet based CPSM). Typically not
used by PC software users.

Once the first location has been configured with the day and time to report in, subsequent locations will automatically be set
to report in 2 minutes after its predecessor. i.e. the system will automatically allocate the day/time for the location to report in.
Allowing the system to allocate report times (recommended) will prevent any report time conflicts and keep the location
reports staggered neatly.
The current values shown in the window display the next slot to be allocated.

test from the Location. Note that the response is only visible in "System Messages" within the Message Store.
Runs a Self Test on the Location. This feature sends a Self Test command to the Location. Note that the result is
only visible in the Location Properties Additional/Advanced Tab.
Make Inactive
Makes a Location Inactive. Once Inactive the Location icon is shown greyed out and any incoming data for
the Location will be discarded. This should be used when it is known that a unit has been removed but a
CMD:UNITOFF was not sent to the unit at the time. Inactive Locations will be excluded from any data exports.
Make Active
Makes a Location Active. To be used when a unit has accidentally been made Inactive.
Move To Unallocated
Moves the Location to the Unallocated pool. For MERLIN XT Satellite units only.
If the unit is physically relocated then (ideally prior to the relocation) use this menu option to classify the unit as
Unallocated. Only once Unallocated can a MERLIN XT be moved in CPSM3 to replace another unit (either GSM or
satellite).
Don't forget that a unit can be renamed by simply editing the Location Properties. Move is required when a unit is
being physically moved or being used to replace an existing unit.
Moves the Unit to another Location. For MERLIN XT Satellite units only. Use this option to "move" an Unallocated
MERLIN XT to a Location that already exists.
What this means is that this MERLIN XT will take over reporting data for the Location and any data from a previous
GSM or satellite MERLIN at the same location will be discarded.
Delete Location

Measurement Time
Enter the time you would like the Location to take a measurement. For units set to take just one reading a day this
is the time of that reading. For units taking hourly readings this is the time all the hourly readings are compiled into a
daily minimum, maximum and average.
Report Day
Select the day you would like the report to come in.
Report Time
Select the time you would like the Report to come in. The reporting time should be different for every Location
to prevent GSM network congestion at one moment in time. During installation of a Location CPSM3 allocates
reporting times automatically to achieve this.
Retry Count
Select the Retry Count. Options are 0, 1 or 2. Please leave at 0 unless you are losing data from a Location. The
system has in built retry mechanisms for getting the data to CPSM3. However by setting this to 1 or 2 you make the
Location get a "receipt" from CPSM3 for every message. This increases GSM traffic and has unit battery life and
communication cost implications.
Retry Hours
Select the number of hours between retries. We recommend 8 hours but this can be reduced if desired. It only has
an effect if the Retry Count is not 0.
Measurement Mode
Select the Measurement Mode for the Location. Options are Daily, Normal or Hourly.

Hourly data sent daily
Hourly data sent in addition to weekly reports of min/max/av
LOWPWR
Hourly reads, weekly summary, modem on once a day.
Time Zone
Select the Time Zone for the Location. GMT. We recommend that all units on a pipeline are set to the same time
zone (without Daylight Saving). This means simultaneous events on a pipeline will be apparent. MERLIN units work
in their own local time, not necessarily the same time zone as CPSM3. This means, for example, an 18:00 report
time is 18:00 local time for the unit.
Close Button
If you have changed the Time Zone, click the Update Now Button to send the change to the Location.
If you have changed the Measurement Mode, click the Update Now Button to send the change to the Location.
If you have changed any settings for Measurement Time, Report Day, Report Time, Retry Count, Retry Hours, Ack
Type, LED Mode, HQ 1 or HQ 2, click the Update Now Button to send the changes to the Location.
If you are using a second HQ. Enter the HQ number in the HQ 2 box. Click the Update Now Button to send the
changes to the Location.
Enter the HQ number for your system. Click the Update Now Button to send the changes to the Location.
The telephone number must be the full international number starting with a +. For the unit to have been installed
and present on CPSM3 this number must have been correct.
NOTE
If you set this incorrectly the MERLIN will report all its data to an incorrect telephone number.
LED Mode
The LED Mode on Locations can be turned On, Off or Discreet. The LED settings work as follows:
In OFF mode the green LED will flash when the unit is swiped to indicate a reset but at all other times the LEDs will
remain off. Note that after using this command the unit will appear to be dead!
Discreet mode is only available on the Test Post and allows the status LED to be active after a reset and during the
initial 20 minute installation period. From that point onwards the LEDs are switched off.
In ON mode the status LED flashes briefly at 2 second intervals during service mode and at 10 second intervals at
all other times.
Acknowledge Type
Select the Acknowledge Type. Options are Message or Delivery Report. This setting only has an effect if the
Retry Count is not 0.
Set to Delivery Report if you know the SIMs in your MERLINs support delivery reports. In the UK this is Vodafone
and Orange NOT O2. In the USA Cingular does not support delivery reports.
It is important to get this setting correct. If retries are set to 1 or 2 the MERLIN will wait for a receipt. This will either
be a Message or Delivery Report. If set to Delivery Report on a network that does not support it the MERLIN will
never get a receipt and will send every single message 2 or 3 times. This is not good for MERLIN battery life (or
communications costs).
When set to Message the CPSM3 has to send a receipt message for every incoming message from this unit. This
can quickly mount up and generate a huge amount of GSM traffic and additional communication costs.
However, for MERLINs in low signal areas do set the Retry Count to 1 or 2 and set the Acknowledgement Type
appropriately to ensure all data does get through.

How To
Although the CPSM3 software has been developed to be as easy to use as possible, the following guides cover the most
common support requests.
How to Interrupt
If CPSM3 is installed on a standalone PC with only one hard drive (C:\), the database can be created and saved anywhere
on the computer. To save confusion and ease locating the database for backups, “My Documents\CPSM Database” is an
accepted location, although the database should, ideally, be saved on another drive (an additional internal hard drive).
As with any business data, regular backups are vital to ensure the data can be retrieved in the case of fire/corruption/
damage/data loss. Backing up the database is simply a case of copying the database file (.mdb file) to another location or
burning it to a CD/DVD. How often this is performed is governed by your company policy, although we recommend a monthly
backup at the very least.
Windows XP allows securing the PC by means of accounts and access rights. We recommend installing the CPSM3
software via an administrator account and then creating a user account to use on a daily basis. This prevents normal users
from uninstalling software or damaging vital Windows components.
Network PC
If CPSM3 is installed within a network environment we recommend you save the database on a local server (which has
regular automated backups). You can also manually backup the database by copying the database file to a safe place
located on another PC, server, CD, DVD or USB memory stick.
Please note that if the database is installed on a server within a busy network you may experience a short delay in refreshing
the CPSM3 information.
Installation and configuration should be performed by an administrator although the day to day running of CPSM3 can be
achieved via a normal user account.
As with any software or application run in a networked business environment, there may be certain restrictions set by your
IT department. The CPSM3 software has been developed to run under any account although it can only be installed with
administrator rights.
For further assistance on creating accounts in Windows XP or Windows 7, network installation or backing up data, talk to
your IT department.
To create a new database, from the CPSM3 software click File – Connect to Database.
Click Next.
Click Finish.
Congratulations! You have now created a new CPSM3 database that is ready to use.
Change Shunt Values
Find and select the Location you wish to change the Shunt Values on. Right click on the Location and select Properties.
In the Shunt area of the window, enter the Shunt Values in the boxes provided. You can select from Millivolts/Volts and
Milliamps/Amps.
If you have a Dual Current Transformer Recitifier Monitor, you can also enter the Shunt 2 values in the same window.
Once you have entered the Shunt Values and selected the correct Units, click the Update Now button to save the changes
to the Location.
Click the Close button to close the window. If any changes have been made and you have not clicked the Update Now
button, a window will prompt you to save or ignore the changes.
Click Yes to close the window without saving the changes. Click No to go back into the window where you can click the
Update Now button to save any changes.
If any previous data has been received from the Location with the incorrect shunt settings, then these need to be updated.
Select the Location on the left hand side then select the first line of data in the Data Pane. Scroll to the last line of data and
select it while holding down the SHIFT button. All of the data to be updated should now be highlighted. Right click on the
selected data, the Modify Shunt menu should become visible.
This will update all the highlighted data for the selected Location.
Enter your Abriox issued Username and Password to login. These can be found on the Licence Certificate you received
when you originally purchased the software.
Once you are logged in, click the CPSM3 link (located on the left hand side of the page).
Compare the latest version to the version you are running. If you are running the same version, you do not need do anything.
If the latest version is newer than the one you are running, click the Download Now link (shown below).
Save the installation file (zip) somewhere safe and easily found. You can now update CPSM3. Please see Update CPSM3
for further information.
Update CPSM3
*IMPORTANT*
Updating CPSM3 has to be performed via an Administrator account. Please ensure the CPSM3
application is not running prior to starting the update process.
Before updating the CPSM3 software, we recommend you make a note of the Database Name and Path to aid re-installation.
Make a note of the Database Name and Path. Once you have made a note of this information, click the Close button to close
the window.
This feature makes a copy of the current database, we recommend you take a copy of the database prior to installing any
updates. From the CPSM3 application, click File - Create Database Snapshot.
Once the snapshot has been taken, shutdown CPSM3 (step 3).
You can copy the main database file manually. By default the database is saved in “My Documents\CPSM Database” unless
you have specified another location.
From Windows XP, click Start – My Documents then open the folder “CPSM Database” or browse to the location you have
previously specified for the database.
Copy the file “Default Database.mdb” (or “your-database-name.mdb” if you have chosen to create your own database) to
another location on your computer or server. We recommend you create a folder called “CPSM Backup” and copy the file there.
Once the database file has been backed up (copied to another location), shutdown CPSM3 (step 3).
The Confirm Shutdown window will pop up advising you that you are about to shutdown CPSM3.
Click the Shutdown button to exit CPSM3.
Log in as an Administrator. Click Start – All Programs – Abriox Limited – MERLIN CPSM – Uninstall MERLIN CPSM3 or
alternatively, click Start – Control Panel – Add or Remove Programs – MERLIN CPSM3.
Log in as an Administrator. Locate the file you downloaded from the Abriox website. CPSM Software-VXXX.zip
Double click the file and follow the onscreen instructions to install.
Log in to the CPSM3 User account. The CPSM3 application should launch automatically and open your default database, if it
does not, you'll need to manually tell CPSM3 where and which database to open.
Make sure Microsoft Access Database is selected and click the Next button.
CPSM3 should automatically pick up the existing database. Confirm the database has the correct file name and path (as noted
in step 1) and click Next.
Depending on the version of CPSM3 you were running, CPSM3 may need to convert your original database. If this is the
case, click Update.
The database will then be converted. This may take several minutes depending on the size of the database and speed of
your computer.
Constant interruption opens the MERLIN Interrupter relay for a set period of time, effectively turning the CP off.
The maximum period of time you can set CP off is governed by the MERLIN TR Monitor firmware version:
NOTE
Constant interruption cannot be applied to the entire Pipeline by default. This is to prevent inadvertently turning CP off along
the pipeline. To apply a constant interruption to the entire Pipeline, you will need to select and apply constant interruption to
the individual Locations within that Pipeline.
The following rules must be adhered to when selecting an interrupt pattern or the command will be refused:
To allow all MERLIN TR Monitors to maintain synchronization, some further restrictions on the patterns are necessary.
Complete cycles must be whole seconds (ON+OFF = complete cycle). A whole number of complete cycles must fit into a 1
minute period (e.g. 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 10s, 12s, 15s, 20s, 30s and 60s are all fine).
Other combinations of settings can also be used as long as the above rules are followed.
This feature enables rectifiers on the same pipeline to synchronize their output and interrupt it according to a precise timing
interval. Synchronized interruption is typically required for CIPS (Close Interval protection Surveys) and DCVG (Direct
Current Voltage Gradient) surveys. The interruption may be switched on and off, or the cycle changed, from a cell phone in
the field (GSM versions only) or from the CPSM3 software.
MERLIN rectifier monitors drive an external 12V relay, which can be electromechanical or solid state. They use GPS to
synchronize their clocks and maintain synchronization at all times.
The option, available on MERLIN Super and Excel Transformer Rectifier Monitors, consists of:
Abriox’s MERLIN Interrupter is designed specifically for precise solid state interruption of rectifiers connected to a buried
pipeline. It fails safe and switches the rectifier output loads encountered under the temperature, environmental and electrical
conditions experienced in a rectifier cabinet. All MERLIN units automatically maintain synchronization with each other.
The patterns that are supported cater for both CIPS and DCVG surveys. CIPS surveys usually require the majority of the
pattern to be ON to maintain the CP protection of the pipeline. DCVG surveys are the reverse and usually have a longer OFF
than ON so that a short “blip” of ON can be seen by the survey tool.
The interrupter settings can be controlled to a resolution of 0.1s (although the actual pattern precision is 1ms). The MERLIN
Interrupter can also be used for switching the rectifier output on and off remotely and for instant OFF potential measurement
at the rectifier.
In countries where mercury relays are allowed, these can be used instead of the MERLIN Interrupter and will offer a highly
reliable, compact and cost effective solution. For very occasional use an electromechanical relay can also be used; however,
outputting interrupter patterns is likely to exceed the relay contact life after only a few weeks of continuous use.
The Location icons will change state (depending on status). Please see Location Pane Icons for more information.
Notes on Interruption
If an invalid interrupt cycle is requested or there are any problems, the unit will respond with an error message to advise why,
this will be shown in the Properties window - GPS / Interruption tab for the Location. Possible causes of error messages can
be invalid cycles, no external power or GPS synchronization issues.
Where the ON period or OFF period is too short for the MERLIN Transformer Rectifier Monitor to take readings during
interruption the MERLIN will automatically disable reads (whilst interrupting only).
The MERLIN Transformer Rectifier Monitor will still continue to check the AC power even if it cannot take the other readings.
The omitted readings will not affect the weekly min/max/average report.
When interrupting the blue LED on the MERLIN Transformer Rectifier Monitor is lit during the OFF period. The OFF period is
the start of the cycle and always starts at 00 seconds of each minute (UTC time).
All MERLIN units will automatically be synchronized in time with each other provided they have GPS lock. The
synchronization error is less than 1ms. If interruption is started before the GPS has lock the cycle will be corrected and
brought into synchronization when GPS lock is acquired. At a new installation when power is first applied it can take 15
minutes for the GPS to fully lock.

Location B
PIPELINE:WEST
LOCATION:UNIT B
In example 1 above, both units have been installed on the same pipeline (PIPELINE:WEST) but have been given unique
location ID’s (LOCATION:UNIT A and LOCATION:UNIT B). This is the correct method of naming.
Location A
PIPELINE:EAST
LOCATION:UNIT A
Location B
PIPELINE:EAST
LOCATION:UNIT A
In example 2 above, both units have been installed on the same pipeline (PIPELINE:EAST) but have been given the same
location ID’s (LOCATION:UNIT A), this will cause data confusion and the system will fail.
The only way you can ever use the same location ID is if the locations (units) reside on separate pipes:
Example 3
Location A
PIPELINE:NORTH
LOCATION:UNIT D
Location B
PIPELINE:SOUTH
LOCATION:UNIT D
In example 3 above, the units have been installed on different pipelines (NORTH and SOUTH) but have been given the
same location ID’s (LOCATION:UNIT D). Even though the units have the same location ID (UNIT D), as they reside on
separate pipes the location reference is unique for each unit.
Pipeline Locate
This feature is to be used with a pipe locator to trace a pipeline route. Only the MERLIN Excel Transformer Rectifier Monitor
installed with a MERLIN Interrupter or MERLIN Interrupter HC can use this feature.
Complete control of Pipeline Locate signal via text messaging in the field or from your office via our web-based
software.
Locate signal applied directly to your pipeline - no more time wasting locating the wrong pipeline.
Existing anode bed provides perfect ground to give maximum locate signal range.
Works with GSM and Satellite MERLIN Excel Transformer Rectifier Monitors.
Right click on the Pipeline, click Pipeline Locate - Start. In the Locate Settings window, enter the frequency (in Hertz) and
duration you require and click Start. Although the system can support a greater range we would strongly recommend using a
frequency between 200Hz and 1000Hz for optimum locating performance (due to the physical characteristics of a pipeline).
All MERLIN Excel Transformer Rectifier Monitors on that pipeline will start to output the requested Pipeline Locate signal.
The Location icons will change state (depending on status). Please see Location Pane Icons for more information.
To stop the Pipeline Locate operation at any time, right click on the Pipeline and select Pipeline Locate - Stop.
A notification window will pop up asking you to confirm ending the Pipeline Locate operation. Click Yes to stop or No to
cancel.
This will effectively turn CP back on for all Locations on that Pipeline. Once Pipeline Locate has stopped, the Location icons
will change back to the default active state.
NOTE
The Pipeline Locate operation will automatically stop once the duration period has expired. Normal CP will then resume.
By Location
Only MERLIN Excel Transformer Rectifier Monitors support Pipeline Locate.
Right click on the Location (MERLIN Excel Transformer Rectifier Monitor), click Pipeline Locate - Start. In the Locate
Settings window, enter the frequency (in Hertz) and duration you require and click Start. Although the system can support
a greater range we would strongly recommend using a frequency between 200Hz and 1000Hz for optimum locating

If Pipeline Locate has been started in the field (via a mobile phone) the Interruption Status will be displayed here. To double
check the Interruption Status at any time, click the Get Status button.
Replace a GSM MERLIN with a Satellite MERLIN
If you have a GSM MERLIN Transformer Rectifier Monitor that is having problems with GSM signal it may be best to replace
it with a Satellite based MERLIN Transformer Rectifier Monitor (MERLIN XT).
To replace the GSM unit (location) whilst keeping the data the GSM unit has collected, follow these steps:
Physically install the MERLIN XT at the location (see the MERLIN XT Installation Instructions for more information). Once
installed and configured, it will appear in the CPSM3 database under *UNALLOCATED UNITS*.
Right click on the unallocated unit and select Advanced - Move Unit to Another Location.
In the new window labelled Move Unit to Another Location, using the drop down boxes, select the Pipeline and Location
which the newly installed Satellite unit is going to be replacing.
Select the date which the Satellite unit was installed at the location by ticking the Move Data From radio button and
selecting the date using the drop down box.
Once you have selected the correct Pipeline, Location and Data Option, click OK.
The Satellite unit has now replaced the GSM unit. The unit will be removed from *UNALLOCATED UNITS* and show in the
selected Pipeline/Location.
If the replaced GSM unit is still reporting in, its messages will be ignored by the system. Please note, ensure the GSM unit
that has been replaced is sent a CMD:UNITOFF command (from your phone) to save its batteries for future use.
Set User Alerts
User Alerts are used by the system to inform selected users (via email or SMS message) about Location Alarms and System
Messages.
Enter the user's name in the box provided. This is purely descriptive to aid in managing user alerts.
Select from Email or SMS and enter the relevant information in the Address/Phone Number box then click the Add button.
We strongly recommend using the full international telephone number for any SMS alerts.
Remove a User
NOTE
If GSM Alerts Enabled is NOT ticked, you will not be alerted to any GSM issues.
Set Alarm Thresholds
Find and select the Location you wish to set the Alarm Thresholds on. Right click on the Location and select Properties.
The alarm thresholds can be negative or positive. The concept is to set a "window" in which the values are acceptable.
Readings outside of this window will trigger an alarm.
The "lower limit" is the lowest (most negative) acceptable value. The "upper limit" is the highest (most positive) acceptable
value.
Example 1
The system will raise an alarm if the reading is more negative than -20V or more positive than -10V.
Example 2
The system will raise an alarm if the reading is more negative that -20V or more positive than 10V.
Enter the Lower Limit and Upper Limit for the channels and click the Update Now button.
Click the Close button to close the window. If any changes have been made and you have not clicked the Update Now
button, a window will prompt you to save or ignore the changes.
Click Yes to close the window without saving the changes. Click No to go back into the window where you can click the
Update Now button to save any changes.
Disable Alarms
To turn the alarms off for this Location, untick the Alarms Enabled box and click the Update Now button.
Set Measurement Time
Find and select the Location you wish to set the Measurement Time on. Right click on the Location and select Properties.
In the Properties window, click the Reporting Tab (this is the default tab when opening Properties).
Using the Arrows (or your keyboard), select the Measurement Time you wish the Location to takes its measurements. In this
example we have entered 17:45.
Once you have entered the Measurement Time of your choice, click the Update Now button to send the configuration to the
Location.
The default measurement time is 18:00. A measurement time of 18:00 is suggested for two reasons:
1)Abriox have observed that this is a peak time for AC interference from national power lines.
2)If CIPS or DCVG surveys are conducted during the working day the CP Monitor measurements will be unaffected.
For units set to take just one reading a day this is the time of that reading. For units taking hourly readings this is the time all
the hourly readings are compiled into a daily minimum, maximum and average.
Click the Close button to close the window. If any changes have been made and you have not clicked the Update Now
button, a window will prompt you to save or ignore the changes.
Click Yes to close the window without saving the changes. Click No to go back into the window where you can click the
Update Now button to save any changes.
Take Readings
Transformer Rectifier Readings
To take a single read from a Transformer Rectifier Monitor, the Location (unit) must have a working external supply (i.e. AC
power).
Right click on the Location you wish to take a reading on and select Advanced - Get Single Read.
The MERLIN unit at the location will take a reading on all configured channels and will report back. Once the report has been
received the data pane will update to show the reading values.
Please note, if the Location is currently in Interrupt mode or in Pipeline Locate mode, the reading will not be taken unless the
Interruption/Pipeline Locate settings allow it.
CP Post Readings
CP Post Monitors do not obey the single read feature like Transformer Rectifier Monitors because they only report in once
a week with a periodic report. It is during this time of reporting back to the HQ that the Location is able to receive any
commands.
CP Post Monitors typically take a reading on a daily basis (at a selected time) and once the reading has been taken, the
unit effectively goes in to sleep mode. Whilst in sleep mode, the Location will not respond to any commands. Only when the
Location wakes up to report back to the HQ will the Location be able to receive any commands sent to it.
Whilst CP Post Monitors will take a read once the message has been received, this could be several days since the the
request was made.
For example
If the CP Monitor has a report day of Saturday and a report time of 07:00 and you request a read on a Friday at 18:00, the
read will actually be taken at approx 07:00 on the Saturday i.e. once the Location has woken up to send its periodic report
and then received this command.
The process of taking a read is the same as the Transformer Rectifier Monitor. Right click on the Location you wish to take a
reading on and select Advanced - Get Single Read.
The MERLIN unit at the location will take a reading on all configured channels and will report back. Once the report has been
received the data pane will update to show the reading values.

FAQ's
Can I use a laptop computer instead?
In theory yes but in the practical sense, no. Laptops are not suitable because they are almost by definition, turned on and
off and moved from place to place – this could mean that data or alarms from MERLIN Transformer Rectifier Monitors or
MERLIN CP Test Posts could be missed. Moreover the GSM signal changes with location and it is important that the CPSM3
PC has good signal strength.
Laptops generally run a lot hotter than PC’s due to their compact design. Running a laptop 24hrs a day, 7 days a week is not
recommended and could potentially damage the internal hardware.
CPSM3 has been designed and developed to run on Windows XP and Windows 7.
If everything has been installed correctly this could be indicating a poor GSM signal. Try relocating the modem. Even a few
inches can make a big difference in signal strength. If you are still unable to get a decent signal you may need to consider
the use of a high-gain GSM antenna, relocating the system to gain a better signal or changing network provider.
Please visit www.abriox.com and click on the Support page. You will need a valid username and password to enter the
download section.
If you are unsure as to what port the modem is connected to, in the CPSM3 software, click “Settings – Select Modem Port”. If
you have several ports listed, the “Device Name” should correspond with the modem you have installed.
In the case of the Elproma modem, it should show as “Motorola USB Modem”. Select the modem and click the “Test” button.
The software will advise you if it has been successful in communicating with the modem. Once the correct modem has been
selected and tested, click “Use”.
By default the installation should create a shortcut on the desktop, double click the “MERLIN CPSM3” icon to start CPSM3.
Alternatively, click “Start – All Programs – Abriox Limited – MERLIN CPSM3 – Launch MERLIN CPSM3”.
No, although you need to ensure that you do not select the internal modem when selecting the correct modem in “Settings –
Select Modem Port”.
CPSM3 Installation Location
Deciding where to locate the CPSM3 system depends on several factors such as security, access and practicality but the
main concern is the GSM signal.
The CPSM3 system consists of a PC running Windows XP or Windows 7, a USB GSM Modem, a SIM Card (offering the
best signal for your location) and the CPSM3 Software.
It is vital that a strong GSM signal is achieved in order to run the CPSM3 system. A weak GSM signal can cause problems
ranging from modem crashes, lost messages and unnecessary retries for installed MERLIN units.
We recommend you check GSM coverage before deciding on a physical location for the system. This can be achieved by
inserting the SIM card (of your chosen network) into a phone and checking the signal in the location of where the CPSM3
system will be situated.
In the example below a company have decided there are two possible (practical) locations for the CPSM3 system; a second
floor office and a top floor office.
Using a mobile phone, the signal levels were monitored in the offices where the CPSM3 system could potentially be located.
SIM cards tested were Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile.
When testing in the second floor office, all SIM cards appeared to be suffering a low signal, however, when relocated to the
top floor the signals were greatly improved.
In this example, Orange has the best GSM signal when situated on the top floor of the building, therefore, Orange would be
the ideal network for this particular area and the top floor is the most suitable location for the CPSM3 system.
Coverage and signal strength depend on a lot of factors and official network coverage maps don’t necessarily reflect the
coverage you may actually get.
Unfortunately we cannot recommend a specific network because coverage varies place to place and each installation has
unique properties that can affect the GSM signal.
Building materials, electrical equipment, pylons, elevation and location are some of the factors that can affect the signal
strength. The best method for finding out which network to use is simply a case of checking which network provider offers the
best signal in the CPSM3 location.
Once you have decided which network to use, the physical location of the CPSM3 system can also affect the signal.
In the example above, Orange were found to offer the best signal for the area. Choosing a physical location can also affect
the strength signal you receive.
Based on this short survey, Office 2 would be the best location for the CPSM3 system.
Whilst you may get a full GSM signal outside the office building with one particular network, you may find that the signal
once inside the building is not feasible. If this is the case you will have to choose another network that gives a better signal
internally. Testing the GSM signal with a phone is sometimes the only way you can help decide which network to use.
