UNIT 7
ESSAY EXPRESSING YOUR OPINION
Itis very useful for young people to learn about the history, art, music and traditions of other nations. There are
various ways in which this can be achieved, including school exchange programmes and cultural festivals featuring
participants from around the globe.
(One means of gaining insight into the cultural legacy of another county is attendance at international dance and
music festivals. Many traditional songs and dances have a connection with significant events in a nation’s past, so
‘they can be seen as an alternative teaching resource. While some people think the focus may be too limited, an
inspiring performance can actually stimulate enthusiasm for a particular country’s past and culture, not just its folk
music and dance
Another approach to broadening students’ horizons to the cultural heritage of other nations is actually to
spend time there as part of a schoal exchange. Host families are generally keen to show their young visitors the
museums and historical monuments in their local area. By seeing the artefacts on display and hearing about
significant events in the region's past, students can learn a great deal. Trying local dishes and taking part in
traditions and customs will also enhance the learning experience.
Of the two means discussed, | believe school exchange programmes constitute the most effective way of helping
students explore the cultural heritage of countries other than their own. While international festivals can be
enlightening, actually seeing a country’s museums and historical monuments first-hand is far more memorable for
young people. They may even be inspired to find out about the country’s cultural legacy in more depth on their
return.
