4: Deep Space Colonist Decision

Imagine that twelve years from now a new habitable world, nicknamed Mundos Novos, has
been discovered near our own planet. This planet is just the size of planet Earth and has the
same kinds of climate and billions of dollars of riches hidden in the hills and valleys of its surface
(just like the New World). Four colonial efforts (joint stock companies/indentured servitude,
proprietor colonies, slavery of convicts and migration) are in place to place human communities
on this new planet however, due to the cost and distance of travel, if you go, you cannot come
back.

In three paragraphs you will explain whether you will go or not, when you will go and how you
will get there using historical evidence from today’s lecture.

IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO GO: explain why. Explain the flaws of these four colonizing systems
(there are flaws).

Paragraph one: (3-5 sentences) Describe the conditions of this hypothetical future (have some
fun with it. What will you be doing in twelve years? That might influence your decision to go
and how to get there). Finish this paragraph with your thesis arguing whether it is a good/bad
idea to go to Mundos Novos.

Paragraph two: (3-5 sentences) Support your choice with evidence from today’s lecture. If you
are going, which method of colonization will you use? Why? If you decide not to go, use
evidence from each of the four methods to explain why you wouldn’t want to go.

Paragraph three: (3-5 sentences) Predict the outcome of your choice. If you choose to go,
what do you think will happen? (Using information from our lecture). If you choose not to go,
what do you think will happen to the colonies on Mundos Novos.
