Indigenous Science and Technology in the Philippines


The indigenous people that can be found in the Philippines are; Negrito in Luzon, Igorot,
Mangyan, Tribes of Palawan, Ati, Tribes of Panay, Lumad, Bajau. Indigenous knowledge system
embedded in the daily life experience of young children as they to grow up. They live and grow
in a society where the members of the community prominently practice indigenous knowledge.
This are the knowledge that are taught by the indigenous people; predicting the weather, herbal
medicine, preserving the foods, classifying plants and animals, preserving local irrigation
system, classifying different types of soil, producing wine and juice, and keeping the custom of
growing plants and vegetables. Predicting of weather, they use the factors that they can see like
moon, animals and plants to predict the weather. When it comes to herbal medicine, they do use
of their experience to create and theories and pass the knowledge to the young members of the
tribes. Indigenous farmer also has their own classification of soil base on the different functions
of it. Indigenous Science is part of the knowledge system practice by the different groups of
people and early civilizations. The practice of indigenous science includes the uses of process
skills that mainly guided by the community culture and values. Indigenous science is composed
of their traditional knowledge. This concludes that the indigenous science have been very
important for the community’s daily live.
