natural environment of Philippines
 

• Indigenous knowledge refers to the understandings, skills and philosophies

developed by societies with long histories of interaction with their natural
surroundings. For rural and indigenous peoples, local knowledge informs
decision-making about fundamental aspects of day-to-day life.
•   Filipino indigenous knowledge are important it helps the people in
understanding the natural environment and in coping with everyday
life.

• Filipino Indigenous knowledge incorporates all aspects of life -

spirituality, history, cultural practices, social interactions, language,
healing but it is relates only to particular people and their
understanding of the world.

• Filipino Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices are local knowledge

developed over centuries of experimentation and are passed orally from
generations to generation. It was found to be an important catalyst to
sustainable development due to their direct connection to resource
management and conservation.
 The connection of indigenous
knowledge to science and technology.

 Indigenous knowledge has the opportunities exist where such knowledge

can contribute to modern science and natural resource management.

 Indigenous knowledge plays role in conserving the nature, food production,

forestry development, medicine, sustainable practices, land and resource
management and ecotourism, climate change and disaster risk reduction.

 Indigenous knowledge about the medicinal properties of plants has been

instrumental in pharmacological development. It is related to herbal
remedies has been the basis of healthcare for local and ethnic
communities for long and still playing a key role in development of new
drug leads in modern therapeutic system as well.
 Throughout history, Indigenous peoples have been responsible for the development
of many technologies and have substantially contributed to science.  Indigenous
methods of food preparation, preservation, and storage are time tested and
have been used by locals people over generation to preserve their produce after
harvest, thereby serving as a survival strategy.
