Lag, Add, and Divide Method in Hydrology

The document describes the lag, add and divide method for developing a longer period unit hydrograph (UH) from a shorter period UH. It involves: 1) constructing multiple UHs by lagging the original UH, 2) summing the ordinates using superposition, and 3) dividing the total hydrograph by the number of UHs to obtain the longer period UH. An example develops a 45-minute UH from a given 15-minute UH table.

CIVL4017: SURFACE WATER HYDROLOGY
Lag, add and divide method
Development of longer period (nD-hr) from a shorter period (D-
hr) UH (n is an integer)

Steps:
1. Construct a D-hour unit hydrograph
2. Construct a second D-hour unit hydrograph by lagging the unit hydrograph
by D-hour
3. Construct a third D-hour unit hydrograph by lagging the unit hydrograph by
2D hours
4. Continue the steps above n number of times
5. Sum all unit hydrograph ordinates (superposition principle) to obtain
hydrograph ordinates of nD-hour duration and rainfall excess of n-mm
6. Divide the hydrograph ordinates obtained by n to obtain nD-hour unit
hydrograph (linearity principle)

Example:
# Develop 45 min UH from 15 min UH
given in table below.
Time 15-min UH ordinates

15 0.30
30 1.80
45 4.30
60 8.30
75 12.30
90 15.50
105 17.50
120 12.60
135 5.70
150 2.50
