Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Situation Analysis

Technology has a significant impact on our lives, and it has redefined the way we

live. There is no doubt that technology plays an important role in all spheres of life. It is

due to technology that all our daily difficult tasks can now be automated easily and

efficiently (Ghosh, 2014).

As technology continues to evolve, the demand for accurate and detailed technical

illustrations also increases. In the field of engineering, for instance, technical illustrations

are critical in conveying complex concepts to a broad audience. As such, the use of

advanced technology has become an essential component in creating technical

illustrations that meet the industry's growing needs. Digital tools and software, such as

3D modeling and animation, have significantly enhanced the accuracy and precision of

technical illustrations, providing an efficient means of presenting technical information.

(Bhatia, 2018)

According to Caudill (2014), technology and illustration are mutually dependent,

with each requiring the other for advancement and relevance. Accurate illustrations of the

parts and processes are essential for planning and constructing new technology.

In addition to its importance in technical documentation, technical drawing also

serves as a means of visual communication within the design process. Research

conducted by Liu and Shih (2018) found that the use of sketches and technical drawings
2

in the design process improved communication and collaboration among design team

members. The integration of drafting courses in design education not only teaches

students the necessary technical skills but also promotes effective communication and

teamwork, which are vital in any design profession.

Industries such as architecture, design, engineering, landscaping, construction, or

drafting require a convenient and efficient way to store oversized documents, blueprints,

and plan drawings. Storing large documents stacked flat on top of each other can be

frustrating to organize and find. Not only are documents difficult to manage, but

documents lying flat are unprotected from accidents like coffee spills (Crock, 2019).

Visual aids and physical documents are crucial tools in various fields, including

construction, education, and research. Portable power tools offer greater flexibility and

mobility, resulting in increased productivity and reduced physical strain on workers in

construction (Christensen et al., 2015). Similarly, access to educational resources,

including visual aids, is limited in remote areas, leading to challenges in delivering

effective education to students (Tshering et al., 2017). Educational technology, such as

computers and projectors, has been found to be effective in improving access to visual

aids and enhancing the learning experience of students. Visual aids, such as diagrams and

graphs, have been found to be effective in enhancing the understanding and retention of

information in education (Suleiman & Halim, 2018).

The construction industry has traditionally relied on physical documents, such as

blueprints, specifications, and contracts, to communicate project requirements and

specifications (Bock et al., 2015). The advent of digital technologies has led to a shift
3

towards electronic document management systems, resulting in the decreased use of

physical documents (Bock et al., 2015). However, physical documents are still widely

used in the construction industry and are considered an essential part of the project

management process. Physical documents can be easily marked up and shared among

project stakeholders, making them an ideal option for remote project sites (Kibert et al.,

2016). Additionally, the use of physical documents can help reduce errors and

miscommunications during the construction process (Bock et al., 2015).

Remote locations often lack the necessary infrastructure to support digital

technologies, making it challenging to present project plans using electronic devices

(Kibert et al., 2016). Thus, physical documents such as blueprints and project

specifications become essential for communicating project requirements to stakeholders.

Furthermore, physical documents offer several benefits over electronic documents,

including ease of use, accessibility, and the ability to provide a tangible reference for

project stakeholders (Bock et al., 2015).

To ensure that physical documents are easily accessible and portable,

professionals need to have a storage solution that is easy to transport and secure. Mobile

storage solutions, such as portable document cases or file folders, can help keep physical

documents organized and accessible while on the move. In addition, professionals must

ensure that their physical documents are kept secure from loss or damage.

Visual aids and physical documents are critical tools in various fields. The use of

physical documents in the construction industry has proven to be effective in reducing

errors and miscommunications during the construction process. Professionals must be

prepared with portable storage solutions to ensure that physical documents remain
4

accessible and secure, especially in remote locations with limited access to digital

technologies.

Compact, lightweight, and easy assembly tools, proper storage of files, and

ergonomic features in presentation devices have been found to offer practical solutions to

various challenges. These solutions have been shown to improve worker productivity,

reduce work-related injuries, enhance job satisfaction, increase efficiency and cost-

effectiveness.

For instance, Mejia and Domina (2018) and Gonzalez and Miranda (2019)

highlighted the benefits of compact, lightweight, and easy assembly tools in the

workplace. These tools not only enhance worker productivity and job satisfaction but also

reduce tool changeover time, promote safety, and increase worker flexibility.

Furthermore, ergonomic tool design, often associated with compact, lightweight, and

easy assembly tools, can reduce musculoskeletal disorders, enhance productivity, and

improve the quality of work.

Shah and Sharma's (2021) study provided recommendations for the proper storage

of files, such as architectural drawings and blueprints. By following these best practices,

these documents can be protected from damage and degradation, ensuring that they

remain an important source of information for future use.

Moreover, the study conducted by Lopez and Chen (2021) emphasized the

importance of ergonomic features in presentation devices such as the presenter. A height-

adjustable presenter that is easy to deploy can provide significant benefits in terms of
5

comfort, safety, and usability, making it an ideal choice for use in lecture halls and

conference rooms.

These solutions can help address various challenges faced in the workplace and in

delivering effective presentations. By implementing these solutions, organizations can

benefit from increased productivity, improved worker safety and satisfaction, and

efficient storage and retrieval of important files.

In addition to the individual solutions mentioned earlier, recent advancements in

technology have led to the development of all-in-one solutions that combine multiple

features in one device. One such innovation is the portable telescopic blueprint storage

and presenter, which offers the convenience of storing and presenting blueprints and

other documents in a compact and lightweight device.

This innovative device provides a practical solution for architects, engineers, and

other professionals who need to transport and present their blueprints and documents in

different locations. With its features, it allows for easy and convenient storage of

blueprints and other documents, while its presenter feature provides ergonomic benefits,

such as height adjustability, ease of deployment, and improved posture.

The all-in-one solution offered by the portable telescopic blueprint storage and

presenter provides a practical and efficient solution for professionals who need to work

on the go. It reduces the need for multiple devices, thereby saving time, space, and

money.

The development of the portable telescopic blueprint storage and presenter

represents a significant innovation in the field of document storage and presentation. It

6

offers a practical solution for professionals in various fields, combining the benefits of

compact, lightweight, and easy assembly tools, proper storage of files, and ergonomic

features in one device.

According to BenQ (2023), a projection screen is a surface that is used to display

images or video content from a projector. It is typically a flat white or gray surface that is

designed to reflect light back to the audience in a uniform manner, creating a clear and

bright image. Projection screens come in a variety of sizes and shapes, ranging from

small portable screens to large screens used in auditoriums and theaters.

The portable telescopic blueprint storage and presenter (PTBSP), on the other

hand, uses a unique material called ecotarp, which is a more affordable and eco-friendly

option compared to other projection screen materials. The tarp material is also readily

accessible in the local market, making it a practical choice for many users. This feature

sets the PTBSP apart from other projection screens, making it a cost-effective and

environmentally conscious choice for businesses and organizations. Other factors that

affect the quality of the image displayed on a projection screen include the gain, or

brightness, of the screen, the viewing angle, and the ambient light in the room.

Projection screens are essential components of modern multimedia systems,

providing a high-quality, large-scale display of visual content. While traditional materials

such as woven fabric are commonly used for high-quality projection screens, the use of

ecotarp in the PTBSP offers a more sustainable and cost-effective option for many users.

Projection screens come in a range of sizes and shapes and can be made from a variety of

materials, depending on the specific application and desired image quality.

7

A blueprint storage tube is a specialized container used to store, transport, and

protect blueprints, plans, and other large format documents. These tubes are typically

made of rigid materials, such as plastic or aluminum, and come in various sizes and

lengths depending on the size of the documents they are designed to hold. They are

essential for protecting blueprints from damage caused by moisture, dirt, or accidental

tearing.

According to Deiter (2019), blueprint storage tubes are available in several

different styles, including twist-off caps, snap caps, and telescoping tubes. Twist-off caps

are easy to use and provide a tight seal to protect the contents from damage, while snap

caps are more secure and can withstand more rough handling. Telescoping tubes, on the

other hand, are adjustable in length and can accommodate a range of document sizes.

The portable telescopic blueprint storage and presenter (PTBSP) is a unique

storage solution that stands out from other tracing tubes due to its use of ABS plastic.

Aside from being the projection mount, this material provides several advantages,

including affordability, sturdiness, high level of protection, lightweight design, and

ability to withstand daily abuse, UV protection and acid-free lining that is necessary to

prevent degradation of the documents, making it an ideal choice for professionals on the

go. Additionally, ABS plastic is readily available in the local market, further enhancing

its accessibility for users.

Blueprint storage tubes are crucial for protecting and preserving large format

documents, such as blueprints and plans. With various styles and materials available,
8

careful consideration of individual needs and requirements is necessary to select the

appropriate tube for the intended purpose.

A tripod is a three-legged stand used to support and stabilize various equipment,

such as cameras, telescopes, and surveying instruments. It typically consists of three legs,

a central column, and a mounting platform that attaches to the equipment being

supported. The legs of a tripod can be adjusted in height and spread to accommodate

different terrains and shooting angles. The central column can also be raised or lowered,

and some models have a tilting mechanism for added flexibility.

According to Robinson and Atkins (2020), tripods are made from a range of

materials, including galvanized steel, carbon fiber, and wood. Aluminum tripods are the

most common due to their durability and affordability, making them a popular choice

among photographers and videographers. Wooden tripods, while less common, are still

used by some professionals due to their aesthetic appeal and vibration-dampening

properties.

The portable telescopic blueprint storage and presenter (PTBSP) features a tripod

made of aluminum alloy, which distinguishes it from other tripods that typically use

galvanized steel. This material choice makes the PTBSP more affordable and lightweight,

while still providing adequate support and stability for the device. Additionally, the use

of aluminum alloy ensures that the tripod can withstand daily wear and tear. As an added

benefit, this material is readily available in local markets.

A tripod is an essential tool for professionals who require stable support for their

equipment. They come in a range of materials and designs to suit different needs and
9

preferences, with aluminum and carbon fiber being the most popular choices due to their

durability and lightweight properties.

The Portable Telescopic Blueprint Storage and Presenter (PTBSP) is a lightweight

and cost-effective tool that offers several benefits to its users. According to a study by

Reja et al. (2018), using lightweight tools like the PTBSP can reduce the physical strain

on the user and help prevent musculoskeletal disorders. The lightweight design of the

PTBSP also makes it easy to carry and transport, especially in rural areas where digital

tools may not be available (Zhang et al., 2019).

In addition to its portability, the PTBSP also provides a high level of protection

for critical documents. The sturdy ABS plastic material used in its construction ensures

that documents remain safe and intact, even when the device is subjected to daily abuse

(Zhao et al., 2017). This protection is especially important in situations where digital

tools are absent, such as impromptu presentations.

The PTBSP also enables better visual communication, as it comes with a

projection screen that can display visual content aside from a multimedia projector.

Magnets are used to mount critical documents on the screen. This feature is particularly

useful in situations where digital tools are not available, as it allows presenters to share

information with their audience in a clear and concise manner (Vega et al., 2019).

Overall, the PTBSP is a cost-effective tool that offers several health benefits,

improves visual communication, and provides a high level of protection for critical

documents. Its lightweight design and sturdy construction make it a practical choice for

impromptu presentations, especially in rural areas where digital tools may not be

available.

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

In this study, the researchers utilized both the development and descriptive

research methods. The descriptive method, as Gillaco (2014) noted, aims to uncover

factual information related to a current situation. It involves describing, comparing,

analyzing, and interpreting existing data. Meanwhile, Clark-Plaskie et al. (2022) define

developmental research designs as techniques that are particularly useful in lifespan

development research. These designs become especially important when describing

development and change because they help researchers understand what changes and

what remains the same as individuals age. These techniques also explore how age, cohort,

gender, and social class impact development.

To evaluate the Portable Blueprint Storage and Presenter (PTBSP), the

researchers had respondents use the product. This process, as Gardner (2016) explains, is
14

known as product evaluation. It involves assessing a manufactured product's suitability

and safety for consumer use.

Materials and Procedure

The materials and supplies required for the Portable Blueprint and Storage

Presenter (PTBSP) were readily available in the local market of the researchers. The

fabrication and assembly process were facilitated through a series of trial-and-error

procedures.

The project's overall costs were assessed by factoring in expenses related to

supplies, materials, labor, and overhead. Specifically, the construction expenses for the

device were calculated based on 40% of the total expenses allotted for supplies and

materials. The labor costs were computed using the average percentage rate charged in

the province, which equated to 40% of the total expenses. Furthermore, the overhead
16

expense was determined by taking 20% of the total costs for supplies and materials,

ultimately resulting in a final sum of ₱2,415.52.

Procedures

Developing a new product requires a systematic approach that involves several

stages of development. In this article, we will describe the stages of development for a

Portable Telescopic Blueprint Storage and Presenter (PTBSP). The PTBSP is a device

designed for architects and engineers to store, organize, and present their blueprint plans

efficiently.

There are five stages involved in the development of the PTBSP: planning,

purchase of materials, assembly/construction, testing and revising, and evaluation.

The first stage of the development process is planning. During this stage, ideas,

opinions, and information are gathered to yield an efficient and effective design. The

researchers brainstormed and sketched the exploded outcome of the PTBSP to be made,

including its specifications.

In the second stage, the purchasing phase, the researchers purchased all the

necessary materials for the construction of the PTBSP. The materials included storage

tubes, tarpaulin fabric, tripod, magnets, and other components required to assemble the

device.

The third stage involved the assembly/construction phase. In this phase, the

researchers assembled, and constructed the parts as per design and specification. The
17

researchers carefully followed the design and constructed the PTBSP using the purchased

materials.

In the fourth stage, the testing/revising phase, the researchers tested and revised

the device to meet the exact requirements and to make it suitable for end-users. The

PTBSP was tested for its durability, strength, and ease of use. The researchers revised the

design based on the feedback from the testing phase, panel members, and evaluators to

improve the device's overall quality.

In the final stage, the evaluation phase, the PTBSP was evaluated based on its

Level of Technical Performance, Level of Functionality, and Level of Social

Acceptability. The researchers evaluated the PTBSP using various criteria such as ease of

use, durability, and portability.

Developing a new product requires a systematic approach that involves several

stages of development. The stages of development for the PTBSP include planning,

purchase of materials, assembly/construction, testing and revising, and evaluation. Each

stage is essential for ensuring the product's quality, functionality, and acceptability to the

end-users. The PTBSP is an excellent example of a well-developed product that meets the

requirements of its target market.

Data Gathered

In the research of the Portable Telescopic Blueprint Storage and Presenter

(PTBSP), data were gathered through the use of a questionnaire in the descriptive-

evaluative phase of the study. The questionnaire was designed to assess the level of

technical performance, functionality, and social acceptability of the PTBSP.

The questionnaire consisted of two parts. The first part was a performance test

that evaluated the PTBSP in terms of time to assemble the device, and time to

disassemble it into a Portable Telescopic Blueprint Storage and Presenter. The second

part evaluated the PTBSP in terms of its level of technical performance, functionality,

and level of social acceptability.

The indicators used on the questionnaire were in accordance with the function of

the PTBSP and were shown to panel members for validation before being used for

evaluation by selected experts and Students at the College of Technology, DMMMSU-

19

MLUC. The experts utilized the questionnaire as the main tool in gathering significant

data for evaluating the PTBSP.

The gathered data will be used to assess the level of technical performance,

functionality, and social acceptability of the PTBSP. This evaluation will help identify

areas for improvement and further development of the device to meet the exact

requirements and make it suitable for end-users. The results of this evaluation will

contribute to the advancement of the PTBSP, making it a more efficient and effective tool

for storing and presenting blueprints.

Chapter 3

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Design, Fabrication, and Assembly of the PTBSP.

In the development of the Portable Telescopic Blueprint Storage and Presenter

(PTBSP), the researcher focused first on creating a suitable design for the device. This

involved identifying both the function and form of the device to ensure that the resulting

design would effectively meet the intended purpose. To achieve this, the researcher

created a tangible design of the device using a three-dimensional drawing (3D) and a

schematic diagram to illustrate how the parts would be connected to produce the desired

output. The design process also included identifying the bill of materials, tools and

equipment required, as well as the overall cost of the project.

The design of the Portable Telescopic Blueprint Storage and Presenter comprises

several parts, including blueprint storage, a telescopic tripod, a tarpaulin, and neodymium
22

magnets. The blueprint is stored inside the tube, which can also be used as a presenter

once it has been assembled and erected. The presenter is supported by a tripod and

attachments for better stability. When compact, the PTBSP measures 838.2mm, but once

unpacked it can be adjusted to the user's preferred height for presenting, reaching a

maximum height of 1841.5mm and a width of 774.7mm. It weighs 1.1kg with the tripod

and features 8 neodymium magnets for clipping the blueprint to the tarpaulin.

The Portable Telescopic Blueprint Storage is a device designed to store blueprints

and present them when needed. Figure 2 on the following page presents an isometric

view of the device, showcasing its dimensions. The device has a height of 1841.5mm and

a width of 774.7mm, as seen in the figure. These dimensions make it a compact and easy-

to-transport device that can be used in various settings, such as construction sites or

architectural firms. The isometric view also highlights the device's tripod, which provides

stability during presentation. With its practical dimensions and stable design, the Portable

Telescopic Blueprint Storage is a versatile device that can aid professionals in their work.

Performance Test of the PTBSP

The Portable Telescopic Blueprint Storage (PTBSP) has proven to be a

remarkable innovation in the field of construction and design. In an evaluation conducted

by the researchers, it was found that the PTBSP can be assembled in just 1 minute and 42

seconds, making it a time-efficient tool for workers in the field. This finding is consistent

with the research conducted by Eren and Turgut (2021), who highlighted the importance

of time and cost management in the construction industry.

Moreover, the evaluators were convinced that the PTBSP can be used anywhere

because of its ease of operation, which contributes to its convenience. This aspect is

supported by the study conducted by Al-Saadi and Al-Reshidi (2017), who found that the

use of mobile devices in construction projects has increased due to their ease of use and

portability.

The PTBSP is also designed to be easily transported from one location to another,

as it can be carried in a PTBSP bag or a regular carrying bag. This feature makes it a

handy gadget to have with you when you are on-site or even when traveling. This is

consistent with the findings of Teli and Jalaei (2015), who emphasized the importance of

portability in construction tools and equipment.

Furthermore, the PTBSP is highly user-friendly, enabling workers to complete

their tasks with ease. This aspect is crucial, as studies have shown that user-friendliness is

an essential factor in the acceptance and adoption of new technologies by Lee et al.

(2020). The PTBSP is therefore an excellent tool for both students and working
27

professionals, as it can significantly improve their productivity and efficiency in their

respective fields.

Table 2 shows the result on the performance test of the PTBSP in term of

assembly time and time to transfer it to its original state. The data presented in the table

Level of Social Acceptability

Table 6 displays the level of social acceptability of the PTBSP, which is rated as

excellent with an average weighted mean of 4.90. The technology is deemed suitable for

use by teachers, students, and student teachers, and it is also considered gender-friendly

(5.00). The Quality Function Development approach indicates that consistency, price,

geometry, connection setup, and construction materials are important features for meeting

customer requirements. While a table based on the house of quality matrix may address

issues and satisfy users, more extensive empirical and field research is necessary to

achieve satisfactory results.

The study findings suggest that the PTBSP is affordable, as its parts can be

readily sourced from the market. Additionally, its design for fabrication is cost-effective,
31

as products can be quickly assembled from fewer parts. Therefore, the PTBSP parts are

easy to construct and can be assembled in less time. The device is designed for ease of

fabrication, which satisfies end-users, and it is also suitable for use by both men and

women.
