LESSON PROPER:
From Start to Finish: Patience and Perseverance
“It does not matter how slowly you go
as long as you do not stop.”
---Confucius---
Sometimes we find ourselves to be very enthusiastic for a task that needs to be done then eventually lose
interest or become lazy to finish what we have started and end up with mediocre work.
If we are to further strengthen our dignity as a person through the work we do and how we do our work,
perseverance and patience are two values that will help us attain this. It is in the little tasks that comprise the work at
hand that we will be able to produce a masterpiece. We would later feel good about ourselves when people
congratulate us for a job well done.

NEVER GIVE UP
Read the story of a son competing in a race and how his father became part of the game.
The Race
“I have completed well; I have finished the race.”—Philippians 4:7
Life lesson from Derek Redmond 1992 Olympics
YOU CANNOT FAIL… IF YOU DON’T GIVE UP – LESSONS FROM DEREK REDMOND
OLYMPICS RACE
I recently had another opportunity to watch the 1992 Men’s Summer Olympic 400-meter sprint that took place
in Barcelona, Spain. At the end of the clip, I got teary eyed just like the last time that I watched the video. This event
reinforced in me the fact that if we don’t give up on our goals in life, we will eventually prevail. I got a new perspective
this time around that we all have someone, just like Derek’s Dad that is ready to hold our hands and help us to rise again
when we fall in the race of life.
Derek Redmond was favored to win the race; he has everything going
for him. Everyone expected him to come out shinning, but as fate would have
it, in just about 150 meters into the race, he had a torn hamstring. He suffered
an excruciating pain that made it almost impossible for him to go on with the
race. Many people, in such a situation, will give up and stop because of the
pain, but not Derek. He persevered and he kept limping along. He was there to
run the race, and he was not about to let some pain stopped him without
achieving his goal. His father who was watching from the sideline suddenly
broke through the security to come to his son’s aid and help him to complete
the race. He provided a shoulder for Derek to lean on so that the race would be a little easier.

Lesson from this event:

Negative traits of Filipino Values
1. “Bahala na” Attitude- Roughly translated as “come what may”. This is the Filipinos’ own version of fatalism, the
belief of trusting in Divine providence or leaving everything to the hands of fate. It is a Filipino’s way of avoiding
rationalization or good reason.
2. Procrastination or “Mañana Habit’- This is the Filipino habit of leaving for tomorrow what can be done today.
They tend to postpone their actions for a later time thus reducing accomplishments.
3. Crab Mentality- Filipinos tend to possess this mentality especially when they feel insecure. In a way, crab
mentality also promotes an unhealthy competition. Filipinos devote so much of their way of deviating people’s
attention on their inadequacy by focusing on other people’s faults.
4. Lack of self-discipline- We have laws and regulations in order to achieve a harmonious community. The Filipinos
break laws to save time. For example, even when a signage clearly says ‘No jaywalking’, Filipinos will still choose
to across the fatal road because it’s more convenient and for them “righteous” to cross there.
5. Filipino Time- ‘Related to the mañana habit, Filipino time refers to the Filipinos’ own unique brand of time,
which is known to be minutes or hours behind the scheduled or standard time.
6. Ningas Cogon- The term ningas cogon (burning cogon) is an expression used by Filipinos for a negative trait.
Ningas means “flame or blaze” and cogon is a type of grass that is tall and thin. The ningas cogon attitude refers
to being enthusiastic and interested only at the start of a project or an activity then eventually lose interest or
totally stop working, as the thin, dry cogon grass which is burns quickly and strongly then immediately dies out.
Reasons for losing interest includes laziness, indifference, lack of concern and discouragement when the task
becomes more difficult.
PERSEVERANCE
Perseverance is our ability to persist, move forward, and finish a task despite difficulties, obstacles,
discouragement, and opposition. A person who perseveres does not stop working until the goal is reached.
Perseverance includes a sense of commitment to a particular goal or mission, whether on the personal or the
communal level. It is not only for the sake of finishing a task but also about coming up with quality work.
We persevere because we accept the fact that we will encounter difficulties and obstacles in life. As
human beings, our strength of character is tested and further developed when we are able to persevere over
and beyond the challenges that we meet. Only those who have mastered self-control have the ability to work
through difficult and challenging times. Giving up is not an option for a person who knows how to persevere.
PATIENCE
Patience is necessary to become persevering. Therefore, these two virtues must always go together to
be able to achieve an excellent work or output. Patience is a virtue that seems to be challenging for young people today.
We are living in a modern world where almost everything gives instant gratification. All we do at the present time is
simply pushing a button and we already get things done.
The continuously evolving technology makes our lives easier. On the other hand, people’s patience on certain
things has decreased. When we need to research something, we immediately turn the internet that can instantly give
tons of information. Going to the library has become rare. When we play video or computer games, our need for
entertainment is immediately satisfied. Traditional outdoor games your parents play when they were younger like piko,
jumping rope, taguan (hide and seek), and many others developed their social skills because they get to interact with
their neighbors and friends.
Patience is a person’s ability to wait something out or endure something tedious, without getting riled up.
Having patience means you can remain calm, even when you’ve been waiting forever or dealing with something
painstakingly slow or trying to teach someone how to do something and they just don’t get it.
