The study of history is an important aspect of education, as it allows individuals to gain a

deeper understanding of the past and how it has influenced the present. One of the essential
components of historical research is the use of primary and secondary sources. Primary
sources provide first-hand information about events and people from the time period under
study, while secondary sources analyze, interpret, and synthesize primary sources to provide
context and commentary.
The Declaration of Independence is an example of a primary source document, as it was
created during the American Revolution and provides first-hand information about the beliefs
and motivations of revolutionaries. On the other hand, a history textbook that discusses the
events of the American Civil War is a secondary source, as it has analyzed and synthesized
information from primary sources to present a historical narrative.
In the Philippines, Independence Day is a primary historical event that commemorates the
country's struggle for sovereignty and self-rule. This event symbolizes the country's fight
against colonialism and foreign domination. In contrast, the 1986 EDSA People Power
Revolution is a secondary historical event that is significant for its role in overthrowing the
authoritarian regime of President Ferdinand Marcos and ushering in a period of democracy
and constitutional reforms in the country.
The deductive method is a valuable tool for explaining complex ideas by starting with a broad
or general idea and then breaking it down into smaller and more specific concepts. In scientific
research, this method is often used in the synthesis of new compounds or materials, where
individual components are combined to create a new substance with specific properties.
As a grade 8 student, I have had the privilege of attending Evangeline School, where I have
had numerous opportunities to develop my personal and academic skills. The school
environment is conducive to learning, with approachable teachers who prioritize student
success in both academics and co-curricular activities. Through my participation in sports,
clubs, and activities, I have gained essential communication and critical thinking skills that will
serve me well in my future academic and professional endeavors.
In conclusion, the study of history and the use of primary and secondary sources are critical
components of education. The analysis, interpretation, and synthesis of information from
these sources provide a deeper understanding of the past and how it has influenced the
present. The deductive method is a useful tool for breaking down complex ideas into smaller
and more manageable concepts, while the positive learning environment at Evangeline School
provides an excellent foundation for personal and academic growth.
A primary source is a document or artifact that was created or produced during
the time under study. Examples of primary sources include diaries, letters,
photographs, artwork, government records, and newspapers.
For example, the Declaration of Independence is a primary source document
because it was created during the time period in which the United States declared
its independence from Great Britain. It provides first-hand information about the
beliefs and motivations of those who were involved in the American Revolution.
A letter written by a soldier during World War II to his family back home describing
his experiences on the front lines.

A secondary source is a source that describes, interprets, or synthesizes primary

sources. It is one that analyzes a primary source. Examples of secondary sources
are textbooks, encyclopedias, research papers, and biographies.
For instance, a book that talks about the impact of World War II on various
countries would be considered a secondary source. The author of the book has
done research on various primary sources such as archival documents, firsthand
accounts, newspapers and has then interpreted and analyzed them to present a
historical narrative. This secondary source is essential for providing context,
analysis and commentary on these primary sources
A history textbook that discusses the events of the American Civil War is an
example of a secondary source. The author of the textbook did not directly
observe or participate in the events of the Civil War but has analyzed and
synthesized information from primary sources such as letters, diaries, and
memoirs written by people who were alive at the time.

Independence Day or Araw ng Kalayaan is a primary historical event in the

Philippines. It commemorates the day when the country declared its
independence from Spanish colonial rule on June 12, 1898. The declaration was
made by General Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Filipino revolution against
Spain, in Kawit, Cavite. Although the Philippines was later colonized by the United
States and Japan, Independence Day remains a significant event that symbolizes
the country's struggle for sovereignity and self-rule. Every year, Filipinos celebrate
this holiday with parades, cultural events, and flag-raising ceremonies

One example of a secondary historical event in the Philippines is the 1986 EDSA
People Power Revolution. This event was a direct result of the assassination of
opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr. in 1983, which sparked widespread civil
unrest. The revolution was a collective effort of various groups, including the
Catholic Church, the military, and ordinary citizens, to oust the authoritarian
regime of President Ferdinand Marcos. The peaceful protests and demonstrations
at the EDSA highway in Metro Manila eventually led to the overthrow of Marcos
and the installation of Corazon Aquino as the new President of the Philippines. The
event is considered a significant milestone in Philippine history, as it marked the
end of the two-decade-long Marcos dictatorship and ushered in a period of
democracy and constitutional reforms in the country.
