HOW IT STARTED
INNOVATIONS TAKE TIME, PERSEVERANCE AND MARKET INPUT

Wind Turbine Shuttle (WTS) Picking up WTGs in harbour

• Designed a decade ago (2009)

• Fast sailing SWATH vessel
• 3D compensation technology
• WTG is assembled in port
• Able to transport and install two
complete WTG’s (Max. 10MW)
• For bottom fixed and floating wind

• Fundamental change needed

• Limited port facilities
• Growing WTG size
• Growing number of WTGs
INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

✓ Floating wind expected to ramp up to ~1GW by 2025

and ~40-50GW by 2035
✓ WTG’s are increasing in size: today 15MW, future up to 20MW
✓ Limited workability current installation method
✓ Limited capable and available Marshalling ports
✓ Current offshore safety challenges
✓ COST!!

Call for fundamental

change in installing
windfarms
FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND NEEDS A NEW APPROACH

Current way of installing floating wind turbines Windfarm Installation Vessel (WIV)

• Transport floating foundation to port • Transport floating foundation directly to offshore location
• Transport WTG components to port • Transport WTG components directly to WIV
• Assemble WTG on floater in port • Assemble WTG on board and install in single motion compensated lift
• Tow out to offshore location • Workable up to Hsig = 3.5m

WINDFARM INSTALLATION VESSEL (WIV)
COMPATIBLE FOUNDATION TYPES

▪ Installation slot dimensions allow for the majority of floating foundation designs
Compatible types Non compatible types

Note*: When WTG mounted on corner of barge

WINDFARM INSTALLATION VESSEL (WIV)
MODEL TESTING

▪ Model testing of WIV performed

▪ Model testing WIV combined with floating foundation planned
WINDFARM INSTALLATION VESSEL (WIV)
ADVANTAGES

✓ Fundamental change of assembly and installing WTGs

✓ Enabling installation of WTGs up to 20MW on floating and bottom fixed foundations
✓ Predictable and increased workability and increased safety
✓ No need for Marshalling ports
✓ Significant lower cost per installed WTG!
✓ WTG tower in one piece from manufacturer
✓ Semi-sub floating foundation can be made smaller
(because no harbor draft limitations)
✓ No harbor required (WTG components directly to WIV)
WINDFARM INSTALLATION VESSEL (WIV)
MORE SCOPE REQUIRED FOR HEALTHY BUSINESS CASE: ALSO FOR BOTTOM FIXED WIND TURBINES

Current way of installing bottom fixed wind turbines Windfarm Installation Vessel (WIV)

• Sailing to port for picking up MPs and WTGs • Can install MPs and WTGs (See also Huisman website*)
• Monohull vessel upends and installs MPs • Transport WTG components to WIV
• Jack up installs WTG piece by piece • Assemble WTG on board of WIV
• Install WTG on foundation in 1 motion compensated lift

UNIVERSAL QUICK CONNECTOR (UQC)
FAST AND SAFE RE-RIGGING

✓ UQC allows fast tool changes without rigging personnel

✓ Crane hook is just ONE of the tools
✓ Increased effective hook height (avoiding additional slings)
✓ Onboard power supply
✓ Radio remote control

5,000mt Universal Quick Connector

MOTION COMPENSATED PLATFORM
SAFE OFFSHORE LOAD TRANSFER

✓ Ideal for transport of offshore wind components

✓ Compensates supply vessel motions for controlled lift off
✓ Improves the overall installation cycle time and costs
✓ Suitable for US projects with international jackups
ONSHORE SELF CLIMBING CRANE (SCC)
UNDER CONSTRUCTION

▪ SWL 150mt @ 175m height

▪ Fully trailerized/containerized
▪ Less down time, rig up in less than 1 day

✓ No modification to WTG
✓ 30% less days per WTG
✓ Less transport
✓ Low environmental impact
✓ Lower cost per WTG
OFFSHORE SELF CLIMBING CRANE (OSCC)
LOW COST SOLUTION FOR FLOATING WIND MAINTENANCE

▪ Hoisted on with low cost vessel

▪ OSCC sits on floating foundation
▪ Holds WTG tower only for stability
▪ Blades guided by Blade Line Up Tool

✓ No relative motions
✓ No modification to WTG
✓ Low cost solution
✓ Blades stabilized and guided
