Introduction
The X-Rayl® DOT-LINK Portal is the online portal for retrieval of the data collected by the X-Rayl® Solar Pointer.
The X-Rayl® GPS positioning system is specially adapted to the needs of rail freight traffic. The user must log
on to an SSL-secured website using a user name and password. The data transfer is encrypted. Each X-Rayl®
locating device can be assigned to an object, so-called "ASSET" (e.g. wagon or container). The activation of the
devices and the assignment to an asset can be carried out independently by the user on the web portal.
Information about one or more assets can be displayed in real time and filtered according to various criteria. In
addition, different views (e.g. map view or list view) and numerous statistics are available. Data from third-party
devices can also be integrated. The data query contains both current and historical data.

1.1 Target Group

With DOT-Link it is possible to track various moving objects on which X-Rayl® pointers have been mounted.
The following functions are included:
• Current status (position, sensors, etc.)
• Time line up to 6 months back in time (more on request)
• Graphical representation of data on the time axis
• Statistical functions, such as usage rate based on depots
• Events that occur due to sensors
• Events that occur due to Geofences, e.g. the stay in predefined geographical areas.

1.2 From Pointer to Asset

The X-Rayl® Pointer is mounted on a moving object. This marriage or assignment can take place via app during
assembly in the factory or in DOT-Link under activation. DOT-Link then offers two views: The Asset View and
the Pointer View. Both differ considerably, as the Assets View shows stops and places and the Pointer View
shows time intervals and thus all pointer data. Both are displayed in the first view in tabular form one above the
other.

Figure 1 Aggregation of asset view

In the asset view, all position reports from the same location are summarized (aggregated). This difference
results in the Asset View showing a standstill at a location with only one line, whereas the Pointer View shows
as many lines as intervals fit into the length of stay. The Asset View provides a better overview and the Pointer
View a better detail resolution. This difference is reflected in all other views (map, etc.).

1.3 Terms and Definitions

This section explains the most important terms that are necessary for understanding the following pages.

1.3.1 Interval
The interval is the time interval between two messages sent by the pointer. There are basically four different
intervals, which can have different lengths. The Send Interval (SDI) at which the pointer actually sends, the
Positioning Interval (POS) at which the pointer detects its position, the Wake-Up Interval (WKI) at which the
pointer wakes up to see if there is a configuration change, and the Sensor Interval (SSI) at which sensor values
are detected.

1.3.2 Asset
An asset is the object (freight wagon, container, etc.) on which the pointer is mounted, and which is to be
tracked and monitored.

1.3.3 Pointer
The pointer is the telematics system located on the asset (freight car, container, etc.). The pointer sends its data
and those of the paired sensors (optional) at intervals (e.g. 15 minutes).

1.3.4 Sensor
Sensors can be located in the pointer housing or connected to the pointer by radio. The latter requires the use
of the X-Rayl® Sensor Box, of which several can be paired to the pointer and with which e.g. boiler
temperatures, loading, etc. can be recorded. The Sensor Box is connected to the pointer via a radio interface
(2.4GHz) and has its own interval. The Sensor Box has its own processor and can intelligently recognize
thresholds, analyze measured values to the extent of changes (gradients) and react (transmit) on the basis of
remotely configurable limit values.

1.3.5 Energy reserve
Since most assets (freight wagons, containers, etc.) do not have a power supply, telematics systems require
their own self-sufficient power supply. In contrast to conventional products, the X-Rayl® Pointer draws its
energy from a solar cell, which in turn can store the energy to bridge times without daylight. This time is called
the energy reserve and is expressed as a percentage. With 100%, a pointer can transmit for around three
months at a transmission interval of 60 minutes without light. This energy reserve depends on many factors
(installation location, intervals, mobile phone supply, START/STOP automatic, etc.). In the period between
March and October, the pointer can be operated with a 3-minute interval between travel and transmission
without noticeably touching the energy reserve. During the rest of the period, driving intervals of 15 minutes are
possible. Naturally, the trip proportion is decisive.

1.3.6 Automatic Start/Stop Function

The X-Rayl® Pointer has a 3-axis acceleration sensor with which it detects with high precision whether it is
moving or at a standstill. This makes it possible to shorten the transmission interval during travel and extend it
when the vehicle is at a standstill, thus saving energy.

1.3.7 Position
The geoposition (short: position) is the geographical location of the asset/pointer and is determined by GPS,
Galileo and Glonass. In addition, mobile phone data can refine the position determination. The accuracy of the
position determination is determined by using the best products available on the market and is usually around
10m.

1.3.8 Time Base

The pointer can traverse time zones and, to avoid complexity, uses a single time base: GPS time and is
essentially identical to the so-called Coordinated World Time (UTC). Since the pointer sends its data to DOT-
Link, where the servers work with MEZ/CET or MESZ/CEST/CEDT, there is a time difference of up to 2 hours
between the times.

1.3.9 Entry timestamp

Time specification in CET/CET or CEST/CEDT of the entry of an incoming message in the DOT-Link database.

1.3.10 Last SMS

Date in UTC time of the last transmission of a pointer.

1.5 Main View
After logging in, the main view appears with the following menu items, which are explained in detail in this
manual:

Assets - Pointers - Sensors - Settings - Administration - Language

Figure 3 Main view

The most important menu items are Assets and Pointers. Assets are the objects (freight wagons, containers,
etc.) on which a pointer is mounted. While under "Assets" the view is "aggregated", i.e. a new row is displayed
during movement, the view "Pointer" is organized in regular time intervals. A pointer at standstill thus creates a
new line after each interval.
In the main view, a table is displayed at the top left. A connected map is displayed next to it on the right. The
statistics are displayed below it. These areas can be folded in and out. Please refer to "General Operating
Instructions".

A detailed explanation can be found in the chapter "Assets".

1.6.1.1 Symbols for displaying the current position

For Assets the current position is either displayed as a point, if the asset is currently not moving, or as an arrow,
if the asset is currently moving, which points to the direction of the movement. Note: Display of arrows is not
possible in asset details due to the aggregation of the data.
For pointers the current position is displayed either as a point, circle or arrow. These symbols have the following
meaning:
• Point – the last report from the pointer has reported a speed of 0 km/h and the current position was
determined via satellite radiolocation. As the pointer is not moving the current position is depicted as a
point.
• Circle – the current position was determined via radiolocation from the mobile network. Neither speed
nor direction exist in this scenario.
• Arrow – the last report from the pointer has reported a valid speed and the current position was
determined via satellite radiolocation. Therefore, the pointer has a direction in which it moves and the
arrow points to this direction.

1.6.2 Notes on Symbols

By pointing with the mouse on one of the square symbols for approx. 2 seconds, the explanation for this symbol
is automatically displayed - see example "Details".

1.6.4 Sorting
In all list views, you can sort by various criteria by clicking on the respective menu item at the top of the menu
bar, e.g. by driven KM or by country or by asset name.

Assets
The Assets view is displayed immediately after logging in. In this view, the assets (wagons, containers, etc.) and
their current locations, the periods of stay and the running performance are visible. The positions of an asset are
displayed aggregated in this view. This means that several position reports for the same location are combined
if the pointer moves only minimally, depending on the positioning interval set. This increases the clarity when
the
X-RAYL® Pointer of the asset sends multiple position reports from the same location.

2.1.1.3 Map Mode

The map offers three different display modes. These can be set in the upper left corner of the map.
Normal: for each asset a blue dot is displayed at the current location. Items in this list can be selected by
clicking on the respective line in the asset list. When a location in the list is selected, it is marked on the map by
a red dot. In this way, several points on the map can be highlighted.
Cluster: Positions in the immediate vicinity are combined and displayed as larger points on the map. The
number of position points contained in each cluster point is displayed. In addition, the cluster points are also
displayed in different colors, depending on the number of position points contained. These points are labelled
with the number of positions that are represented. If the mouse pointer is moved over one of the points, a
polygon is displayed that describes the area in which the corresponding positions are located in more detail. In
addition, cluster points are colored in a gradient from green to yellow to red according to the number of positions
represented.
Heatmap: Aggregated position points are represented as a heat map by colored markings. Areas on the map
are displayed in different colors depending on the number of position points. Areas with fewer positions are
displayed in blue, areas with high density (many positions) in yellow and red. The color display of the heatmap
always depends on the currently selected zoom level of the map view.

5.1 General Information

In this section, the default values for language, map mode and map type can be set. Three parameters can be
selected from a list for each of these values. These settings determine which value is automatically applied to
the parameter, i.e. in which mode the maps are automatically loaded when a view is opened.
In this section also display the authentication code for the X-Rayl Asset Scanner app. With this QR code you
can authenticate in the X-Rayl Asset Scanner app to assign X-Rayl Pointers to Assets. In addition, you can
assign X-Rayl Sensors to X-Rayl Pointers with NFC. The app can be loaded from the App Store and the
GooglePlay store to your mobile device. By pushing the button “New” you can generate a new authentication
code and simultaneously deactivating the current authentication code. This requires the reauthenticate for using
the app afterwards. By pushing the “Delete” button the current authentication code is deleted, and a new code
has to be generated before any assignments can be performed again with the app.

6.4.2 X-Rayl® Scanner users

X-Rayl® scanner users can change the assignment of assets to X-Rayl®
pointers, the assignment of X-Rayl® sensors to X-Rayl® pointers, and the
assignment of assets to tags. In general, the users can perform any of the
above actions only for objects owned by the user who created the X-Rayl®
Scanner user. Please note that X-Rayl® Scanner users have no access to
X-Rayl® DOT-LINK.
To create a new X-Rayl® Scanner user press the button “New X-Rayl
Scanner”. A dialog for entering the user data is displayed. Enter “Display
name” and optionally an expiry date for this user. The display name is also
shown in the X-Rayl® Scanner app and the expiry date may be used to
control up to which date the user may perform any assignments with the
app.
Two privileges may be set for a X-Rayl® Scanner user. The first privilege
“Create assets” may be set to allow the creation of assets during an
assignment in the app. If this privilege is not granted the asset must exist
in the X-Rayl® DOT-LINK database before any assignment can be done.
The second privilege, “Check user”, controls whether assignments can
only be done for objects that belong to the user who created the X-Rayl®
Scanner user. If this privilege is set to “No” the user relationship is not
checked. This allows the X-Rayl® Scanner user to assign assets or X-
Rayl® pointers that do not belong to the user who created the X-Rayl®
Scanner user. If an action for an object of a different user than the creation
user is performed, a warning dialog is shown in the X-Rayl® Scanner
app.The privileges which are set to “Yes” are displayed in the overview
next to the authentication code. The default setting is “No” for “Create
assets” and “Yes” for “Check user”.

By clicking the button “Continue” you get to the recipients for the app user.
You may enter several e-mail addresses. A summary for all assignment
changes between pointer and asset performed with the app will be sent to
the entered recipients in the selected language. By clicking the “+” button
you can create a new row and by clicking the “x” next to the language you
can delete a row. Notifications are sent either once per hour or once per Figure 34 Dialog for editing app
