What Judges Want // Photo

By exhaustively brainstorming each and every photo assignment, the staff can determine what kinds of images will best capture
the experience. Usually a combination of action and reaction shots will best exceed readers’ expectations, however the strategic
scrapbook or illustration photo will enhance coverage. Plan photo ratio to represent 75-80% action; 10-15% reaction and 5-10%
snapshot/illustration.

Every photograph should capture some of the spirit of the individual and collective experience adding to the credibility of storytelling
coverage. To give each photo the most impact, it is critical to consider both the content and composition as well as the technical
quality so all are above reproach. Using composition techniques will empower the staff to offer viewers eye-catching and attention-
keeping photographs.

Use this checklist to move your yearbook program toward established award-winning qualities as defined by national associations. The
process will also help in gaining recognition from Jostens in the Look Book, photography and design contests. In general, the process
will take 3-4 years with diligent effort on the part of the adviser and yearbook staff.
