ADAPTABLE CITY
“Adaptability is the quality of a space that can be easily adapt-
ed to harmonise with the changes of use that it undergoes or
may undergo”

Layers of change
Rhythms People’s use of a city tailors the rhythm of the city and is in constant transformation.
Our rhythms are influenced by changes in the surroundings.

The built environment is constantly changing,

although some elements are more lasting than
others. The development of the urban fabric
happens due to human rhythms, but changes in
the built environment can also lead to changes
in people’s rhythms and use of the city. Theese changes needs to
harmonise in order for the

space to be adaptable.

cyclically and creates
the basis for different

times. Such changes
are climate change,
diurnal variations,
seasonal variation,
natural progression,
growth and decay.

lost many of the intimate relationships and some
of the network that previously was taking care of
people. What is left of the original community is found
as fragments in today`s society in the neighborhood,
the workplace and through a collective mentality. In
these fragments, it is possible to create long-term
and more intimate relationships. A neighborhood

Social interaction is therefore central for this

proposal. Interaction between rhythms, nature and
urban development. Interaction is essential to the
effective use of spaces and the creation of a sense
of community that Sandvika seems to be currently
lacking. We therefore propose a “structure” that
builds up around the community. The social rooms
along the river provide the opportunity for meetings
between residents, visitors and those who work
there. Different programs are placed strategically
along the river, according to what kind of rhythms
they generate. The various programs link the
local and regional through various neighborhoods
features, jobs and housing arrangements.

River spaces
Natural processes in Sandvika are most evident in the case of the river of Sandvika and its flooding.
There are four different spaces that stand out along the river. This definition is not absolute, but is based
on a spatial character through inspections, the dynamics of the river in this space and topography.

Rather than looking at the flood as an obstacle for future development, we ask what flooding can gener-
ate in the various spaces of the river, and what premises theese can give?

The municipality has proposed to preserve a 30m zone on both sides of the river due to the fact that
large parts of the river have high value in terms of biodiversity. But instead of simply preserving, how The river must be understood as a process

The following spaces form the basis of this proposal: erosion and sedimentation. A design along
the river must be flexible and take into ac-

These parts of the river have a good visual

cross - connection, with a similar charac-
ter on both sides. The space is constantly
changing, as it is regularly exposed to
flooding. This river space is particularly
valuable with its close contact to the river,
and the ecological processes initiated by
flooding.

Beveled edge
These parts of the river have varying ter-
rain height on each side, and create poor
cross-connection. On the lower side, the
river has the same character as the Dy-
namic riverscape and flooding will there-
fore have a significant impact on this side.

High banks
These parts of the river have a good visual
cross-connection, but in a level higher than
the surface of the river. It is therefore less
contact with the river than in the Dynamic
riverscape.

Open riverspace
The river is at its widest through this room,
and creates little contact across the river.

Beveled edge
Principle

Extracting floodwater in dikes between the

houses. The gardens will benefit from the
silty and clayey soil that floodwater are
bringing.

Principle

Due to less value of biodiversity because of technical interventions,

buildings are placed at the edge and taking up the hight difference.
This will create a better contact across the river. The flood prone side
of the river will have a more scenically character where floods have
free rein.

A network of bridges links the two

sides together and creates an active
communication across the river. Open riverspace
