Residue Filtration
CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines — Last week, the Department of Environment and Natural
Resources held its multi-stakeholder dialogue in Mindanao, where mining companies discussed
how they have been managing the social and environmental aspects of their operations. In
addition to contributing to deforestation and the climate catastrophe, mining also endangers
water supplies. Residents on the island of Sibuyan are protesting Altai Philippines Mining
Company's mining exploration efforts. According to reports, the mining company's operations
have been put on hold until the issues presented in the protests are resolved. We have a lot of
natural resources, and the government says that if we use them all, we could be one of the ten
mineralized nations. However, because of this, foreign companies come to the Philippines to
exploit and plunder our mineral resources. However, communities are becoming more adept at
retaliation; bigger demonstrations are planned; and lobbying efforts are conducted in Congress
and other pertinent venues. Illegal magnetite mining at the Cagayan River's mouth in the
municipality of Aparri became another problem. The provincial board of Cagayan urged
President Rodrigo Duterte to put an end to Pacific Offshore Exploration, Inc. (POEI)'s dredging
operations in 2019 since they endangered the environment and the livelihood of locals.
We are aware that the current issue in Cagayan de Oro also affects water resources during
weather disasters, such as rivers and water canals, and we cannot just cease mining operations
since it would be a major step and mining operations also contribute to our economic
development. However, we can limit its effects by developing creative initiatives that everybody
can complete.
