Residue Filtration

As aspiring Metallurgical Engineers that

focus on the extraction, refining and
recycling of metals we also should be
aware and solve issues like lowering
corrosion, regulating heat levels, and
boosting the product's strength and
create or enhance metals for usage in the
entertainment, defense, and
transportation sectors. A metallurgical
engineer's work has an impact on other
engineering disciplines. Create
fundamental materials that can improve
the performance of several systems and goods. But aside from that, we should be also concerned
about the environment and the raising problems about climate change.

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines — Last week, the Department of Environment and Natural
Resources held its multi-stakeholder dialogue in Mindanao, where mining companies discussed
how they have been managing the social and environmental aspects of their operations. In
addition to contributing to deforestation and the climate catastrophe, mining also endangers
water supplies. Residents on the island of Sibuyan are protesting Altai Philippines Mining
Company's mining exploration efforts. According to reports, the mining company's operations
have been put on hold until the issues presented in the protests are resolved. We have a lot of
natural resources, and the government says that if we use them all, we could be one of the ten
mineralized nations. However, because of this, foreign companies come to the Philippines to
exploit and plunder our mineral resources. However, communities are becoming more adept at
retaliation; bigger demonstrations are planned; and lobbying efforts are conducted in Congress
and other pertinent venues. Illegal magnetite mining at the Cagayan River's mouth in the
municipality of Aparri became another problem. The provincial board of Cagayan urged
President Rodrigo Duterte to put an end to Pacific Offshore Exploration, Inc. (POEI)'s dredging
operations in 2019 since they endangered the environment and the livelihood of locals.

We are aware that the current issue in Cagayan de Oro also affects water resources during
weather disasters, such as rivers and water canals, and we cannot just cease mining operations
since it would be a major step and mining operations also contribute to our economic
development. However, we can limit its effects by developing creative initiatives that everybody
can complete.

Proposed project:
In the present day there is a drinking water filtering system that is now available for
purchase in stores that you can connect in our home faucets.

For example:

In this inspiration, we believe that we can create a larger

filtration system, but not only to filter water, but to filter
mining waste, mud, and dirt to prevent the flooding that
mining sites created.

We can utilize a lot of plastic bottles in this project despite

the fact that we need to reduce and recycle our use of plastic
bottles. This method can be used in this project, but in
larger bottles that are framed on the water sewage and
placed just next to the openings where the water enters.

The water is already filtered and does not

overlap with the waste, thus using the
filter will not result in this consequence.
Objectives
● To increase understanding of the significant role mining plays in climate change.
● To promote mining corporations how they can use sustainable mining to make a by also
supporting water systems.
● To balance our economic, environmental and social needs, allowing prosperity for now
and future generations.

Activities
● Conduct online webinar for the people of Cagayan Valley and to their water system
management.
● Conduct training and seminars with the LGU of Cagayan De Oro to raise public
awareness.
● Conduct weekly environmental monitoring with LGU in Cagayan De Oro in the area
where mining occurs.

Time Frame
This project will be conducted in the month of May 2023.

Persons Involved
● Department of Environment and Natural Resources ( DENR )
● LGU of Cagayan De Oro
● Residents of every Municipality of Cagayan De Oro

Success Indicators

● Since the online webinar and trainings/seminar, which were conducted in collaboration
with the Lgu of Cagayan de Oro, went effective and successfully, despite the fact that
mining is now taking place in the area, the residents and the barangay officials of every
municipality in Cagayan de Oro have the understanding and knowledge in protecting the
environment.
● Due to the support of the Local government unit in conducting environmental monitoring
that had positive outcomes, the residents and barangay officials of every municipality in
Cagayan de Oro had cooperation to maintain a healthy and attractive environment.
