EXERCISE 4

What is the climate in your country (hot, cold, etc.)?

Peru is possessor of a great climatic variety, this is generated by the diverse altitudes of
the Cordillera de los Andes, it presents the following climates:

Very dry or desert semi-warm climate, very dry warm climate, sub-humid temperate
climate, cold climate, frigid or puna climate, snow or icy climate, very humid semi-warm
climate, humid warm or humid tropical climate.

Has the climate changed in recent years? How?

Yes. Peru has been classified as one of the most vulnerable countries in the face of climate
change. It is also known that if the different sectors of society do not act jointly, the
consequences could be very serious in the near future.

The high temperatures in Peru and the extreme cold in countries like the United States
and Canada show that these variations are a high-impact climatic phenomenon.

The year 2019 has started with changes in the weather in various parts of the world. Peru
is facing record heat with temperatures reaching up to 36 ° C, while, in the United States
and part of Canada, temperatures reach -39 ° C.

The high temperatures that have arisen in our capital cause a greater demand for water;
However, this becomes a serious public problem since Lima is a city that faces water
stress, that is, it suffers from insufficient water for domestic and industrial supply.

‘’Every year, the earth increases its temperature by 0.9 degrees Celsius and it will
continue to do so.

To give us an idea: July was the hottest month in our entire history, and the previous
record was held by June. In the Peruvian case, the reality is no different. According to the
United Nations (UN), Peru is the third most vulnerable country to climate change in the
world. ''

In addition, relevant figures on the consequences of climate change in Peru were

presented. For example, it is estimated that 22 percent of the surface of the Andean
glaciers will be lost and will lead to a reduction in drinking water of up to 40 percent.
Likewise, the frequency and intensity of extreme climates will increase, as will
desertification and the fall in the production of basic crops such as potatoes, corn and rice.

Finally, the areas suitable for construction will be reduced and 89 percent of the country's
road infrastructure will remain vulnerable.
