Etymology

Acinetobacter is a compound term made up of the scientific Greek letters [ + v + ()],

which signify nonmotile rod. The initial part, acineto-, is rendered rather baroquely from
the Greek morpheme akineto-, although it truly derives from the French cinetique and
was immediately translated into English.[Reference required] However, the French term
likewise derives from the Greek privative plus (motion), indicating that the origins are
the same but came about by a different route.
