ANTIKYTHERA MECHANISM

A) What is it used for?

Antikythera mechanism , ancient Greek mechanical device used to calculate and display
information about astronomical phenomena.

B) What era is it from?

The instrument is believed to have been designed and constructed by Greeks scientist and
has been variously dated to about to 87 BC or between 150 and 100 BC , or to 250 BC, or to
whitin generation before the shipwreck, which has been dated to approximately 70-60 BC.

C) What are the mechanisms that form?

Is formed by bronze gears, the movement of the mechanism comes from the primary gear,
that with its movement, is calculated to move all the other gears, also moves directly one
pointer that indicates the date in the Egyptian calendar.

D) Where was it found?

It was found in Greece in Antikythera’s island, in 1901. It was among the remains of a
Roman era shipwreck.
