Overview

The organization, Alliance for Clean Air in Ermita, was formed to lessen the
pollution in the Ermita. The organization started by discovering on how the pollution
occurs in the chosen locality. The major reason of which is transportation, a vehicle’s
smoke. When the organization figured that out, they started planning how to tackle that
problem. After discovering the main cause of the air pollution in the chosen locality,
which is smoke emissions in the vehicles. The organization plans to make an item that
will absorb pollutants before it is even released into the environment.

The FiltAir is the product that the organization is proposing. To make sure that
the product will be implemented and maximize its potential, the Land Transportation
Office will mandate a filter for every car that is registered and a new one whenever it is
renewed. As for the funds for the filter, a fund-raising activity will be an annual fun run at
Rizal Park to minimize the price for the filter that it may remain accessible to all.

The goal of the organization is to reduce air pollution. Pursuing this goal of the
organization is our top priority and reassuring the organization’s product will be a
successful lunch and maintaining the product at its best condition where as the product
is connected to the vehicle as the vehicle releases smoke, the product will make sure
that it will reduce emissions released in the air as the vehicle goes by.

Curriculum Vitae

I am Leann Audrei G. Elizaga. Even as a student, I believe that

we can do something that can spark a change, and this should
definitely be the case for the status of air pollution. No act is so
small that it has no effect.

I am Alecsis B. Andal, a Senior High school student who cares

and loves the nature, concerned for the environment and wants to
take action to save the Earth as soon as possible.

I am Ma. Kristine Joy S. Catacutan, a person who advocates to

help the environment to be cleaner and to lessen the
environmental issues such as air pollution which it can harm the
environment and the health of the people. As we all know, air
pollution is actually progressing into a threat here in the
Philippines. That is why, we need an organization that advocates
the cleanliness not only for our environment but also for our health. Also to able to
conduct a product in which it can lessen the pollution in the air.

I am Jhamella Quirante graduated at Carlos F. Gonzales High

School with honors. I believe that pollution has always been a
danger to everyone, as for me who has been affected. I could say
that the filter will be a huge help not only for the ill people but for
healthy people as well, with the filter there will be a bigger
possibility that they would not catch any diseases from air pollution. The filter with its
biodegradability, it could be easily disposed at any compose. The filter would not just

3
help us achieve a clean air and environment but keep everyone away from the risk of
being distress and having diseases caused by air pollutants.

I am Aldrich Joseph T. Aranzamendez, a person who loves

nature, a Trinitian that is a Senior High School student who is
an environmentalist that strives to save the earth with the
utmost abilities I have and with my concern for the
environment, he continues to find a way in order for the sake
of humanity and our beloved mother nature.

Born on September 15, 2004, I am John Ken B. Angeles and I

have a strong work ethic, knowledge on electrical engineering,
technology skills and currently studying Nihongo at Trinity
University of Asia; graduated at St. Vincent School for Junior
High School and San Vicente Elementary School for grade
school; making sure that the product is well build and it is for a
long-lasting durability, caring for the environment and helping to
remove all the causes of smoke emissions or air pollutions.

I am Ryan Ronald A. Mayo, a person that is an adherent of

environmentalism concerned with issues that affect the
environment, such as pollution, maintenance of ecological
balance and the conservation of the environment.

I am Anjelo Cyrus Garcia, a person who is willing to help our

environment, to lessen environmental issues and also to help
other people. I can relate on the environment issues because as
we all know the pollution here in the Philippines can harm every

4
single species specially us humans. That’s why we need to communicate for us to be a
healthy people but also to become environmental preserver.

5
Introduction

Air pollution impedes on the quality of life and our surroundings and the
Philippines is no stranger to that. The Philippines ranks third highest mortality
associated with air pollution (Ernano, J. O. & Subingsubing, K., 2019). According to the
World Health Organization and Asian Development Bank, the air in Metro Manila is too
contaminated by harmful particles and as stated by Feliciano R. Fajardo, “In the city of
Manila, Ermita tops the list of the place the most polluted air.” The city mentioned is
currently facing numerous struggles and air pollution is considered the most hazardous
and dire need for action.
Statement of Need
The prevalence of ambient air pollution contribute to the degradation of the health of the
population and the air they breathe from and challenges the role given as stewards of
God.

Key Concerns:

 The burning of fossil fuels and smoke emissions are major contributors to
pollution and climate change.

 Air pollution causes minor and serious physical illnesses that can lead to
death.

 Exposure to air pollution can be associated with psychiatric disorders and

increase one’s stress.

 People have neglected their role as the care takers of nature.

Goals and Objectives

To provide the people in Ermita with relevant information regarding the reducing
of emitted pollutants, so that they gain more knowledge and assist them in order to help
the environment to be healthier. To assist and provide inspiration to people for being
stewards that Utilize, preserves and manage all resources provides for the glory of God
and the betterment of His creation.

6
Aiming to provide awareness and to evaluate the changes in the environment
caused by the emitted pollutants to the participants, for those that aims to provide basic
guidance on current knowledge and expert consensus in the field. To help the public
and the people to understand the risk, and in order to inform policymakers with a view to
improving legislation in this field.

7
Project Plan
The Philippines also ranked third in the number of deaths at 45.3% per 100,000
due to outdoor air pollution, China recorded 81.5% death and Mongolia; 48.8%. The
group formulated an idea in order to lessen the effects of air pollution. The product is for
the transportation vehicles. Transportation is a major source of air pollution in numerous
countries around the world due to the high number of vehicles on the roads. Vehicles
introduce toxic materials into the atmosphere that have several bad effects on human
health and the ecosystem (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2014).

Transport emissions have increased by a quarter since 1990 and it is continuing

to rise until today. If the emissions of biofuels are properly accounted for and instead of
being considered fully renewable, greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles would be
about average 10% higher than the official statistics. However, even new vehicles
deliver up to about 10% of on-road emissions in 20 years. There are several factors that
contributes to increase the emissions on the road. One of the factors is the size and
weight of the vehicles (Transport & Environment, 2018). Based on records of the
Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the current rate of air pollution has
declined by about 20%. However, it is still more than the allowable level stated in the
Clean Air Act. Based on records of the Land Transportation Office, more than 6,000
vehicles have been added on the road from 2012 to 2014.

The organization will be organizing a yearly fun run event wherein the money
collected from the said event will be allocated for the materials needed in making of a
filter for the exhaust of a vehicle called the FiltAir, promote physical activities and
promote walking, running or cycling as the means of transportation over using
transportation vehicles. The organization will use 1 main component for the FiltAir,
eggshells. Eggshells has the ability to absorb pollutants up to seven times its weight
due to its calcium carbonate content. A single FiltAir has an approximate capacity to
absorb 1,128 grams of carbon dioxide per filter and when replaced every 4 months it
has the capacity to absorb approximately 4,500 grams of carbon dioxide annually for
every car.

8
Evaluation
FiltAir has the ability to purify pollutants by absorbing the contamination in gases
produced by vehicles. With FiltAir, pollutants would be absorbed and reduced before it
could even reach the atmosphere. Legislating its use for majority to all vehicles will cut
down carbon emissions. Eggshells are able to absorb seven times its weight in CO 2.
The climate is incredibly complex and tweaking with one aspect of the system byproduct
we have no way of preparing for. ACA will be hosting an annual fun run to lessen the
cost of the filter and encourage everyone to purchase the filter and to take care of their
health. The fun run is most beneficial to public utility jeepney drivers who may not afford
a filter at a high price. The Alliance for Clean Air in Ermita will be collaborating with the
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority for those who do not conform to the
regulations for the FiltAir. The FiltAir’s design will feature designated colors to indicate
the date they’ve bought the filter and when it should be replaced for the MMDA and
ACA to easily distinguish who hasn’t changed their filter and apprehended them.

Dissemination
The organization will plan to set a mandatory requirement having a filter attached
to the exhaust pipe of the vehicles like private cars, motorcycles, and trucks, EV
expresses, jeeps and public buses with the help of Land Transportation Office, an
agency of the Philippine government under the Department of Transportation and is
responsible for all land transportations in the Philippines.

They will supply the Land Transportation Office of Ermita with both holder and
filter correspondingly. Every time a vehicle is registered or renewed, the owner will
receive the proposed product. Furthermore, the filter itself will be sold to the public
market through hardware stores for the convenience of the people, along with drop off
sites that individuals can donate clean eggshells. The organization will also be
contacting local food establishments for their eggshell wastes and buying it from them
for at most half of the eggshells needed for production. The fund will be raised through
the aforementioned fun run in the Luneta Park to reduce the cost of the filter that it may
remain accessible and minimize its price.

Conclusion

Air pollution is progressively growing into a threat to humanity and the

environment, increasing the difficulty of one's livelihood, as it impairs the physical,
spiritual, and psychological wellbeing. It does not just cause stress, anxiety, or
discomfort, but alarmingly, it is a huge threat to mental health, especially to the fetal
development of children. It is indeed a consequential risk factor for the biosphere, for
the pollutants which are composed in the air that the humans are exposed to are
dangerous towards the health. Pollution can be caused by fuels, vehicles, smokes and
other heavy manufacturing industries that contribute to the degradation of quality air.
This matter will continuously devastate the surroundings if not reformed, and it will
become extremely fatal without any action done by the residents and the government,
the quality of air that the earth only has today will completely deplete.

The impact on the environment and society caused by air pollution is unarguably
severe, and it is progressing into a more menacing threat to life. But there are solutions
that we can do in order to prevent air pollution, because we are the stewards of God’s
creation, we must do our best to save the Earth, little by little, then all at once. Attaching
a filter to the exhaust of vehicles is one solution to reduce pollutants in the air. The
effects of the filter will be more substantial if it becomes mandatory for a registration and
a renewal of a car. The calcium carbonate in the eggshells absorbs the pollutants that
cars emit, hence, it prevents the harmful substances to ventilate along the oxygen we
inhale.
