IV. DESCRIPTION AND RATIONALE:

In line with the Laudato Si: On Care for our Common Home, the second
encyclical of Pope Francis, and the SJCQC Core Values on Integrity of Creation,
we the Bachelor in Science second year Students thought of doing the Vertical
Gardening as our Project Proposal in NSTP 2.

A vertical vegetable garden is a gardening technique that produces vegetables in

space-saving, efficient and creative ways. Vegetable gardens can be put in small
spaces, such as on balconies or other outdoor spaces in the city, and they can
produce an abundance of food by using vertical gardening techniques that make
the most out of every square inch of usable garden space.

Vertical Vegetable Gardening is a 2 1/2 months project that involves the Senior
Citizen members of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (SFIC)
in La Verna Quezon City. Since most of the elderly sisters are homebound
residents of the La Verna Retirement Home, they really need to eat fresh
vegetables without pesticides and to have a green healthy environment for their
well-being.

V. OBJECTIVES:

1. To help the SFIC elderly Sisters to have a safe way of gardening that
produces healthy and clean vegetable harvest.
2. To promote the Filipino Values of taking care of the elderly people.
3. To help the students to gain knowledge and skills in planting
vegetables and to give them an opportunity to bond with Mother Earth
and the rest of God’s creation.
