PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
Introduction
Absenteeism is one of the major and continuous issues in the field of academe in the country.
It has a big impact on the learning of the students because the larger the number of absences
the students acquire, the lesser lessons the students would be able to attend in class. This
would also mean that there would be lesser and disconnected concepts of learning. It has been
a significant concern for educators, policymakers, and parents worldwide. Regular attendance
is crucial for a student's academic success, and chronic absenteeism can negatively affect
their academic achievement, social-emotional development, and future prospects. The root
causes of absenteeism among students are complex and multifaceted, including individual,
According to Bas et al., (2019) Nowadays, our school system is facing different problems and
challenges that affect the student’s particular life. One of these is the absence of a student to
his or her class leading to dropouts. This is the reason why there is a large number of
This habit is considered to be harmful in the long run as it not only impacts the performance
of the absentee but also instills a laidback attitude and serve as a hindrance in achieving
his/her ambitions in life. Despite the numerous efforts to improve attendance rates,
With this, the study aimed to determine the root causes of students’ absenteeism that are more
prevalent in a public high school. Simultaneously, this would help the educators and school
strategies to motivate the students to attend classes. Moreover, provision of the possibly
effective solutions and preventive measures to minimize absenteeism of students and give
educators the opportunity to know what and how to improve the student attendance.
This study aims to determine the root causes of absenteeism among the grade 11 students of
Florita Herrera Irizari National High School and provides a solution to prevent and lessen it.

Definition of Terms
Several terms must be clearly defined for the purpose of the study, the following identified
are:
Root causes - is defined as a factor that caused a nonconformance and should be permanently
eliminated through process improvement. The root cause is the core issue—the highest-level
cause—that sets in motion the entire cause-and-effect reaction that ultimately leads to the
problem(s).
Policymakers - someone who sets the plan pursued by a government or business etc.
Attendance rate - the percentage of a school or district's overall student population that are
Intervention strategies - a plan for staff action that outlines methods, techniques, cues,
programs, or tasks that enable the child to successfully complete a specific goal.
OUTPUT
Respondents - The researcher will only select 10 students as a
representatives of each strand from grade 11 students of Florita Herrera Proposed

The input consists of attendance record of the respondents from their adviser. The attendance
record can help to determine who among the students of each strand are always absent in the
third quarter of the second semester. The process is composed of the data collected from the
learners which is their responses from the researcher-made questionnaire. The output contains
the proposed intervention which is the result and output of the study. These includes the

Student Absenteeism
According to Brant (2017), absenteeism refers to a student being absent from school. It can
be happened motivationally based or structurally based (Birioukov, 2016). And can lead to
depression resulting in poor quality of education as a result of time lost while being away
from school (Eneza, 2013). Absenteeism has been documented to have various negative
In another study of Khan (2019), Absenteeism has become a common phenomenon nowadays
in schools and it refers to unscheduled absence from school for various reasons. Thus, school
increased risk of dropping out of school or failing to graduate. One finding suggests that by
Year 9, a student’s chances of completing secondary school drop by 20% for every week of
school they miss. This demonstrates how the negative effects of absenteeism can be seen
early on in a student’s school career, and how they can have a significant impact on their
dropout, and student discipline (e.g. Balfanz & Byrnes, 2018; Gottfried, 2017).
Factors of absenteeism
management and school schedules, as well as health issues and a lack of social activities are
the main factors influencing school absenteeism. When students are absent from school, there
is a wide range of short-term educational consequences. First, they will miss assignments
which might lead to perform poorly and out of synch in different subjects. Moreover, they
will miss classroom activities which cause a tendency to be left behind because of being not
For example, Özcan (2020) stated that parental involvement is one of the main reasons for
school absenteeism. Parents have responsibilities for children, especially during their
educational period. Students having parental support have a high level of school commitment,
academic success and low school absenteeism rates. In another study of Lodhi et al., (2019),
when students are absent from lectures, they miss valuable information and do not clarify
Komakech and Osuu (2014) investigated the major cause for student absenteeism and the
possible solutions to the cause in Universal Secondary Education Schools in Uganda. The
findings showed that the lack of scholastic requirements, household work, lack of interest in
education, hunger at school or lack of mid-day meals, sexual harassment at school, long
distance to school, illness or disease, loss of parent or close relative, peer influence, and harsh
punishment at school were the top ten causes of students’ absenteeism in schools.
Therefore, there is a need for intervention programs to help students improve their academic
performance. A study conducted in Metro Atlanta entitled “Interventions to Combat the Many
Facets of Absenteeism” the results of this study demonstrated that using a dual approach to
increase student attendance was effective in reducing the number of absences for the
members of the group. The study found that using incentives and a daily check-in system
increased attendance, improved academics, and created a sense of belonging. The students
Student Absenteeism
Student absenteeism is defined as the period of not attending to school. It also refers to the
persistent absences from work, school, meeting and the likes. According to Lannegrand-
Willems et al. (2012), when a child misses some of the classes or not present at the school
with or without a valid excuse, it falls on absenteeism. When a student has not attended
school for a long period of time, they are classified as truant or absentee. In this manner, the
constant absence of students abstains the opportunity to learn hence, the learning process is
interrupted.
Therefore, absenteeism is a common problem of public schools in the Philippines. One out of
ten students are marked absent every day in the classroom (Dimaisip, 2019). According to the
Department of Education (DepEd), students must be present at least 80% of the total number
of school days in a year to fulfill the requirement in attendance. Once the students' absences
exceed the allowed 20% of the total number of days in a school year, the student is
Education in the Philippines indicated that one out of ten children is considered as constant
absent in school. The rate of student absences is 4.5%, quite high and increasing, and is
highly observable in middle schools (Cepada & Grepon, 2020). Moreover, the study of
Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) indicated that the numbers of drop out in
school are more inclined to boys as compared to girls. School absenteeism is now a
worsening and continuing problem in the secondary school (Demir & AkmanKarabeyoglu,
2015; Reichenberg & Lofgren, 2019). A noticeable problem especially in public schools is
that those students who belong to the lower sections acquire more absences than those who
Factors of absenteeism
There were several factors and reasons to consider that the students were not willing to attend
the school. These factors include conflict in the family, health emergency, inability to
maintain the everyday expenses, weather disturbances, use of alcohol, and unavailability of
Therefore, absenteeism is decisive in many issues such as students' academic success, social
development, and school discipline. Chronically absent students are also at a greater risk for a
number of negative long-term consequences, such as being more likely to experience poverty,
diminished mental and physical health, and involvement in the criminal justice system as an
When students are absent from school, there is a wide range of short-term educational
consequences. First, they will miss assignments which might lead to perform poorly and out
of synch in different subjects. Moreover, they will miss classroom activities which cause a
tendency to be left behind because of being not involved in the learning activities.
Lorenmurcia (2022) has reported that families of habitually absent students can also suffer.
For a poverty-stricken family, it may mean a continuation of the poverty and unemployment
cycle that may run in the family. This also contributes to family conflicts. Society also suffers
when school-age children are not in school. These children may hang out on the streets. Since
they have nothing to do, they resort to petty crimes like stealing other people’s belongings
and property. Others may become addicted to drugs or engage in other destructive behavior.
Thus, if a student keeps away from school for too long, he may grow up to be a liability to his
community and his country as a whole. Other reasons for not attending and becoming
disinterested in school come from the lack of interest and motivation of the learners and the
lack of desire of parents to send their kids to school. Malcolm (2003, as cited in Cepada and
Grepon, 2020) viewed the absenteeism as an indirect variable which cause a building gap
between the learners and the teachers. Furthermore, Pehlivan (2006, as cited in Demir and
Akman-Karabeyoglu, 2015) revealed the reasons for the non-attendance of students in school
including the lack of expectations on the subject, they were bored, and the lessons were not
Also, health problems are identified as a major contributor to student absenteeism, whether it
is the student's health issue or family health issues, as the family prohibits the students from
attending the school (Corley, 2012). In addition to the consequences of student absenteeism, a
range of factors such as inclement or bad weather and transportation problems are some of
the reasons why the students do not attend classes in school. Severe weather like heavy rains
and storms could let the students not be able to leave their houses. They chose to stay at home
rather than going to school because of the fear of risks such as accidents and getting wet that
result in
being sick. Transportation issues such as buses not coming to the house, risky roads, traffic,
and overloaded vehicle will impart a great impact on the student's ability not to go to school.
Minor contributions such as no allowance or no snacks are also considered a factor. This
means that students' absenteeism in high school leads to more negative effects on academic
