boosts local economies and catalyses change.
It’s these factors that the KNVB unites in the
WorldCoaches program to empower local
communities in developing countries.

By balancing football training with life skills

lessons, a WorldCoach teaches children to
become better footballers and guides them in
issues faced in the local community like drug
abuse, HIV/AIDS, and water and sanitation.
For children and communities worldwide, a
WorldCoach is an invaluable role model on and
off the pitch.

ABOUT

The KNVB has trained football coaches in

developing countries since 1997. In 2009 this
program evolved into WorldCoaches. With a
new name came a focus on combining football
training with developing life skills to empower
young people and their community.

Who can become a WorldCoach? Absolutely

any man or woman, from physical education
teachers to former professional football
players, community workers and volunteers.
Since 2009 we have successfully trained
9,000 WorldCoaches in over 20 countries,
including Kenya, Mozambique, Ghana, South
Africa, Indonesia, Netherlands Antilles and
Suriname. With the program’s ‘Coach the
Coach’ philosophy, we hope to ensure a strong,
sustainable local network of community
coaches across the world.

WORLDCOACHES
EDUCATION

The WorldCoaches education consists of two

interrelated components: football coaching
and life skills. Football coaching focuses on
simplifying the game and creating a safe sports
environment. The structure for the life skills
training is set by a manual we developed with
Utrecht University, which serves as a constant
reference for every WorldCoach.

Practical workshops are also provided to

instruct the coaches in their responsibilities
as a role model. Using the “Realize, Analyse,
Act” principle, the WorldCoaches are trained
in critical thinking and equipped with the tools
and skills to adjust and apply the manual’s
principles to the local context. The two
components are united when the WorldCoach
incorporates the life skills tools and training
into the football activities.

SDGs

Teamwork is one of the essential lessons that

WorldCoaches pass on to their players. On and off
the football pitch, the team that works together,
wins together. It’s this teamwork ethic that
links the WorldCoaches program to many of the
Sustainable Development Goals. We’re training the
leaders of tomorrow to use the power of football
to create a better world.

Gender equality is a one of our key values, and we

work together with international development
organizations and local NGOs to increase and
sustain the impact of our work in areas including
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (Football for
Water); Solar Lighting (Philips Community
Light Centers); Sustainable Livelihoods (Sport
for Development); Nutrition (WorldCoaches
AIMfor1Goal) and Peace (Sport and Humanitarian
Assistance).

TRAINING

WorldCoach John Sibeko: “I put all my

thoughts on paper first with all the right
ingredients: objectives and outcomes; age
factor; technique, insight and communication
(TIC); a fun element; and correct
methodology. Football and life skills are
integrated flexibly depending on the situation.”

WorldCoach Martha Karimi: “I like having

a good relationship with my players so I can
build their self-esteem. This enables them to
perform well in training sessions.”

PRE MATCH

WorldCoach Kenneth Jaliens: “Preparation

starts days in advance. First we talk about
their results at school. Then we start preparing
for the game: I inform the players about the
opponent and tell them to respect the other
team. We start practicing to develop their own
style of playing, then move on to the possible
opportunities and threats in the match, and
the way to defend and attack.”

FIRST HALF

WorldCoach John Sibeko: “The game is for

the players. I only give advice during natural
stoppages, otherwise I say very little and
concentrate on watching the game. If my team
is behind, I use motivation, patience and stick
to the game plan. I always wait for a suitable
moment to give advice.”

WorldCoach Martha Karimi: “My focus is

keeping my team organized in the field so they
don’t lose position on the field. I give them
instructions that encourage them to play.”

HALF TIME

WorldCoach Kenneth Jaliens: “I try and keep

everything calm and be positive. My players
expect me to share my confidence and football
knowledge of the game: and so I talk to them
collectively and individually to give them
hope and self-confidence and inspire better
performances.”

WorldCoach John Sibeko: “During the break

I motivate my players by reinforcing our
strength as individuals and a team.”

you can gain the right knowledge to use at
