Writing Assignment (30 points)

1. When would you use a between subject experimental design and when would
you use a within subject design? (4 points)

2. Describe how the driving performance data in figure 3.9 represents a two-way
interaction, and what the graph would look like without the interaction. (4
points)

3. To evaluate a new in-vehicle navigation system and how drivers from three
different groups including young, middle-aged and older, would like the new
system when compared to the old system, you are hired to design an
experiment to gather data and evaluate the new system by comparing the old
system. (8 points)

 Please state your study hypothesis (2 points)

 Please identify possible dependent variables(2 points)
 Please identify possible independent variables. (2 points)
 What kind of study is yours, within, or between? (1 points)
 What kind of statistical tests should be used? (1 point)

4. Following the general procedure of anthropometric-in-design, please design a

standing workstation with an adjustable desk to accommodate 95% of users
(gender-balanced: i.e., 50% of user population are female, and the rest are
male). On top of the desk surface, workers are required to complete some
precise assembly tasks with the work pieces’ height = 70 cm. Due to a safety
concern, workers are required to wear steel toe working boots with 6 cm
heels.

 If the work surface height is adjustable, then what is the range of adjustability
of the work surface height? (7pts)
 If the work surface height is fixed at 95thpercentile male work surface height,
then how to design a height-adjustable standing platform (i.e., range of
adjustability) to accommodate shorter workers. (7pts)

Please justify each step of your design process and provide quantified dimension of your
design. Tables for the last question is posted on canvas under Files.
